The Songs Of Sayyed Darweesh: Soul Of A People is an audio CD of music written by brilliant Egyptian composer Sheikh Sayyed Darweesh (1892-1923). Darweesh's untimely death sadly cut short his seven-year musical career, which expressed Egyptian identity while transcending boundaries of style, history, geography, and genre; Darweesh's love of Italian opera in particular is reflected in his creations. Now his works are revived with the performance of the Chicago Classical Oriental Ensemble, which strives to re-create the atmosphere of Darweesh's era and the experience of sitting and listening in Cairo coffeehouses. Highly recommended. The Songs Of Sayyed Darweesh: Soul Of A People features the tracks This is What Happened; Safely, Safely; As Long as the Night Lasts; Angelic Soul; I Fell in Love; ... Read More

If you like your R&B raw and accompanied by a dirty, honkin' sax, you're gonna love Mr. Jackson.

This is a recent compilation of songs from McTell's first three albums, released from 1967 through 1969. I first learned about McTell with his 1971 release, You Well-Meaning Brought Me Here, so the existence of these earlier albums was a surprise to me. But it's great to hear McTell in this early stage of development. This CD contains the original recording of Streets of London. With McTell picking away for all he's worth, this version is much starker than the later "hit" version most listeners are familiar with. Many of the other tracks --Terminus, Nanna's Song, Willoughby's Farm, Factory Girl and Kew Gardens to name just a few -- are stunningly beautiful. McTell's early dedication to acoustic (and even jug band) blues is apparant in several of the tracks. It's fun to try to listen ... Read More

This is an outstanding box set! Bear Family has done it again! This set includes everything by Johnny and Dorsey Burnette and you get to hear a lot of rockabilly and Johnny's solo work such as his hits Dreamin, You're 16, Little Boy Sad and many more! There are even some unreleased alternate takes and demos which I know you will all enjoy! Yes, it is quite expensive, but it's all worth it for the casual fan like myself or for any rockabilly fan! You even get to hear songs that were hits later for artists such as Ricky Nelson It's Late and Believe What You Say plus their own version of Drinking Wine Spo-Dee-O-Dee which Jerry Lee of course recorded. Johnny very sadly lost his life while drowning after going fishing in 1964 so it's great that he recorded so much before his untimely death. Highly recommended!
