Peter Buck's opening notes on the third R.E.M. album struck the mood; ominous and cutting. "Feeling Gravity's Pull" chucked the murky atmosphere of Murmur and the poppy jangle so predominant on Reckoning, replacing it with a haunting crush of sound. "Fables of The Reconstruction" was R.E.M.'s darkest album to date and spoke of tensions the band was having at the time. It's also, by contrast, it's also their most southern. Songs like the horn-heavy "Can't Get There From Here" (ever ask for directions in rural Georgia?), "Auctioneer (Another Engine)," and "Driver Eight" - a train song for heaven's sake - dig into the myth of the deep south, and legendary folk producer Joe Boyd highlights the right elements. The single disc version of this CD is probably a perfect retro pop CD. The two disc version is icing on the cake. Probably the most inspirational core set of material from any modern band coming out of the post punk, new wave / MTV era in the eighties. The newer material is different but just as good. If you have nothing, this is probably the best place to start.

By 1985, I had already lived a few years absorbing this being called: R.E.M. The only reason that I was ahead of the pack was due to my move to Virginia two years prior. The Music scene in the South was very fertile {New Bands had a chance of Radio play} and the Club/Bar circuit was rich with Veterans such as Gregg Allman and Robin Trower, but was also generous to new Bands such as: The Georgia Satelites and Red Ryder, that were playing throughout the Southlands. The early 1980's DID show promise, away from the constant deluge of: "Thriller." R.E.M. had been through my town already, and my Concert memories of the show in Virginia Beach with The Dream Syndicate as the opener in the hot summer of 1984, had already passed into the stuff of Legends. I noticed all the complaints on sound. So my 5-star rating is really for an import, "The Best of R.E.M." With 16 songs the songlist is representative of R.E.M.'s early years, though there are no rarities on it. It starts with "Chronic Town," then proceeds with 3 songs from each album chronologically from "Murmur" through "Document." The sound quality is fine, although a little lower than most newer CDs, so you have to turn it up a little. I wouldn't call this a comeback album , but man it's really good. MDC have been around along time and many people thought they were fading out. They released "Shades Of Brown" in 92-93, I thought that was good and that was it for along time. They released a Comp CD which was necessary ["Now More Than Ever"], if you don't own the discography. "Corpses of the Ultimate Dominators" is way more energetic than the previous album and angrier it seems. I hope they release more music to us lucky fans, concerning ridiculous episodes of corruptness. Get this CD...Long Live MDC!

They released "Shades Of Brown" in 92-93, I thought that was good and that was it for along time. They released a Comp CD which was necessary ["Now More Than Ever"], if you don't own the discography. "Corpses of the Ultimate Dominators" is way more energetic than the previous album and angrier it seems. I hope they release more music to us lucky fans, concerning ridiculous episodes of corruptness. Get this CD...Long Live MDC!
