Recordings of "La Traviata" are never in short supply and this recording has been somewhat "lost in the shuffle". There is much to recommend it - first and foremost, the rarely recorded artistry of the late Pilar Lorengar. Though her fluttery vibrato may put some listeners off (as well as some odd Italian pronunciation), her fragile interpretation takes a fresh look at Verdi's tragic courtesan. Giacomo Aragall was at his peak at this point in his career. Lorin Maazel conducts the score with great sensitivity. The big drawback: Dietrich Fischer-Dieskau is dreadfully miscast as Germont. He sings wonderfully but his interpretation of the role is too severe without the change of heart which makes this character so very human. Perhaps this is not the first choice for a "Traviata" recording ... Read More

The main interest of this Traviata is of course the performance of
Montserrat Caballé. Caught in her youthful prime (1967) her sound
is utterly gorgeous from top to bottom. She negociates the colora-
tura of Act I with considerable ease and elsewhere her singing is
often exquisitely beautiful. She brings elegance and refinement to
the role but ultimately her style and manner are a bit too regal
and stately for Violetta. Carlo Bergonzi is likewise all elegance
and refinement but he brought more spirit to Alfredo on his earlier
recording with Sutherland. Sherrill Milnes also caught in his youth-
ful prime sings superbly but at this early stage of his carreer he
simply sounds too young for Germont. Georges Pretre has been harshly

This is a very, very fine performance of "La Traviata". Caballe's is probably the best vocalized Violetta since Tebaldi's, and she sings with great involvement and artistry. No question about it ------- it's a beautiful assumption. Carlo Bergonzi's Alfredo is also a model of its kind. His singing is refined, elegant, and always lyrical and fluent. Sherrill Milnes, in what I believe was his first complete operatic recording, is also quite special. Basically, the only problem I have with this performance is a personal one: I do not think "Traviata" is improved by having Violetta sing two verses of her cavatina before the "Sempre Libera", as well as both verses of the her final act aria. This is a practice that began, I believe with Joan Sutherland's first London recording in 1963, and ... Read More

There have been very few great Violettas in the XXth Century. Maria Callas was obviously one, and Renata Scotto is another. La Traviata is a great tragic opera, and it deserves to be taken seriously. Many light coloraturas have taken "Sempre Libera" as a vocal showpiece, but fireworks is not really what Verdi wanted to say. Renata Scotto knows how to communicate. Very few singers give weight and meaning to the words like she does. Very few singers sing with their heart as she invariably did. Just listen to her "Amami Alfredo" and you will understand what I mean. This is one of the greatest recorded performances of all time, and since Callas didn' t have luck with this role in the studio, this is the recording to have. Sure, Votto is routine, but Scotto would be worth hearing even with worse ... Read More

The misleading customer image is that of the 2003 reissue (slime line and without booklet), not the original 1993 jewel-box release, which contains the libretto, and whose cover features captions from the Scala production. This error is evident from: the issue date (1993), pre-2003 customer reviews (from 1999 onwards), the price (the re-release version costs around 16, not 33, bucks), as well as the Marketplace sellers' references to 'box', 'jewel case', and 'booklet'.

Is it an italian traviata? No. Is it La Traviata? Maybe.
Karajan made peculiar performance similar to engraving. Beauty and delicacy combine with distance and chill - involving and disputable blend. I think it's interesting but not for everyone.
