Immensely gifted soprano Shauna Holiman has gathered a group of poets, composers and musicians to create this CD and the result is a stunning and courageous collection of songs. It is at the same time melancholic and joyeous, unpredictable and accessible. The words and the music work together as an organic seamless whole, inspite of all the different artists involved.
They are all doing an amazing job, but Holiman's passionate and impeccable performance is outstanding. This is music of heartbreaking beauty.

I have followed the music of Matthew Shaker for years now and I could not be more pleased than to finally own his CD. I feel that Matthew's style is his biggest attribute. His writing and vocal purity is very refreshing in a world of music that is usually thrown in your face. I highly recommend this CD for a pleasant and relaxing listening eperience! In the immortal words of Lucy Ricardo, "Yeah dad! This cat is way gone man!"

The key here is quite simple. As one of the other reviewers on this page has said, Saul is one of Handel's "operatic" oratorios. Who best to present same than Rene Jacobs? M. Jacobs has been criticized for an overly dramatic approach to choral music at the same time he has been soundly praised for the same quality. So it is up to you to decide. Unlike some of the other astute reviewers on this page, I have only a very old recording to compare Jacobs's performance to, and that comparison happens only in my head, since I no longer own the LP recording of that performance. In any event, the comparison would be invidious to say the least. What I hear in Jacobs' recording is a commitment to the score and more importantly, a commitment to the period that created this very great music.

From the very start you know you are entering a masterpiece performed by one of the greatest living conductors. First the use of instruments. Each one has a particular part to play and, even in the most unified tuttis of the orchestra, each instrument plays its role and can be followed faithfully without getting lost in some kind of blended melting pot. This is admirable from the opening notes right on till the end. Then Handel uses voices in a very creative way too. David is an alto, which is normal in the 18th century since he is the hero and no one is going to cast a shadow on him. The alliance of this alto with the tenor Jonathan or the soprano Michal, or even the antagonistic soprano Merab, leads to giving each voice a real dramatic depth. The two sopranos are not used the same way since they ... Read More
