This CD is a real discovery. Only one of the works has even been published. All but one of the pieces was written by Talma in her 70's and 80's. They belong to a type of emotion that is highly rarified. Not everybody will warm to this music. It is often quiet, with very few grand gestures. The ensembles are intricate and carefully wrought. Talma writes especially beautifully for flute. The soloists on the disc are all virtuosi. Not the slightest allowance has to be made for its budget price. The sound is beautiful, too. In spite of the astringency of the expression, there is something alluring and even heartwarming about this music. I find myself wanting to listen to it over again after each first listen.
