This is one of the wittiest CDs that I have ever heard. Breiner very successfully finds baroque elements in music where a non-composer's ear would never pick them out. Would you have noticed the similarities between "Michelle" and the main subject of "Die Kunst der Fuge"? Buy it.

Emmanuel is probably the most gifted musician in the folk/country acoustic guitar genre. He performs at a level reminiscent of the late Lenny Breau. Center Stage is an affordable two disc live recording and well worth getting if you love acoustic guitar music. I knock a star off for material -- Emmanuel's original instrumental compositions are beautiful and sometimes even challenge his audience but his covers tend to be predictable and crowd pleasing. Instead of "When I'm 64" wouldn't it be cool if his Beatles medley included "She Said She Said" or "Tomorrow Never Knows?" A minor quibble about a very fine recording.

If you are hoping to hear the incredible guitar playing you expect from Tommy Emmanual, this is NOT the CD to buy. There are a few good tracks like Blue Moon but most of the three discs are a waste of plastic. This is Emmanual playing with other musicians and it sounds like elevator music. This is what Emmanual must have been refering to on a PBS special when he complained about how record companies expected him to play instead of how he wanted to play.

I didn't investigate this carefully when I bought it. I knew it was the first US release but I hadn't realized it would be entirely a mix of songs from other albums (duh). I generally don't care to buy compilation albums but that's just a personal preference. Don't get me wrong - they're great songs. But I felt sometimes that some of the selections were attempts to... pander to american tastes? All I know is that there are a couple of songs on there that I wouldn't have picked as the top 15 and a couple I really like that AREN'T on there. But hey, you get a nifty sticker! I really like Love Psychedelico, and they're pretty much the ONLY japanese band my bf will listen to when I drive. Overall I'd say this is a good selection of songs -- maybe not their ... Read More
