I've always loved Neil Diamond, and this album was very refreshing, adding a little country to the mix. So few artists have stayed on top for so many years like Diamond--wish we had more of them.

This is an unexpected, out-of-left-field cd reissue from Sony's Special Markets label. It's budget priced at less than $6, so it was an easy buy for a Waylon completist like me, as it's full of songs from a period that's been woefully ignored on cd releases this side of the Atlantic from Germany. Of all the songs, the only two I'm familiar with are "Only Daddy", which is an all-time classic, and "Walk On Out Of My Mind", which was a bonus track on Buddha's Love of the Common People reissue from a few years back.

The liner notes of that collection said that "Walk On Out Of My Mind" had never been issued before by RCA, which is obviously innaccurate since Only The Greatest came out on LP back in 1968. I'm not all that knowledgeable about Waylon history, though, so can anyone fill me in ... Read More

If you're of the opinion that Deep Purple functioned best as a jam band you may have already been drawn to this like a moth to an Insectocutor. Those who haven't - you have been warned, this is not a very good show.
First, the very trivial complaints - Gillan doesn't know the words to "Kentucky Woman" (now there's a surprise, not!) and makes no effort at improvising lyrics in "Speed King/Kneel And Pray" (at least the BBC version was sort of coherent).
Now what are the good points? "Hush" and "Wring That Neck" feature very charming Jon Lord solos, complete with amusing musical quotations and Emersonesque distortions. "Paint It Black" reminds us that Paice had the musicality to as well as the technique (he was better at constructing a solo than Bonham or Baker), and the band manage to get ... Read More
