First of all, let me say at the outset that audiophiles will NOT like this series from Mavis of Canada as the sound quality is certainly not up to the standards of anything to emanate from the likes of Ace of London, Rhino, Varese-Sarabande, Eric Records, or Collectables. In fact, it tends to waver from barely adequate to satisfactory.

Even so, for those of us who grew up with the hiss and pop of the 78- and then the 45-rpm this is tolerable, and if you gather together all eleven volumes in the series (so far) you will have 297 selections you're not apt to find in too many top-quality releases (so far). Indeed, some you won't find anywhere else as many were minor hits by bona-fide One-Hit Wonders. It is also important to note that there are no liner notes whatsoever, although the ... Read More

Pure poetry. Very nice arrangements and execution of traditional and updated versions of many tunes we've heard before. It's a pleasure to hear them again when they're done so well.

When it came to "just plain Tom Petty" albums, we had '89's "Full Moon Fever", followed by '94's "Wildflowers". Then there was this humongous gap between that and '06's "Highway Companion". Now we finally have the piece that was supposed to go in there, in this album. The classic "Shady Grove" (which I first heard in junior high on a live Kingston Trio set). Then right away we get the best one; "Scare Easy". Other standouts are the Dave Dudley hit "Six Days On the Road", which was his followup to the spoken "Giddyup Go", They both became major forces during country's big nationwide radio breakout of the 1960s and it's good to hear Petty do one of them. He even does the extended Lynyrd Skynyrd thing in "Crystal River" when (as another reviwer pointed out) he doesn't usually do long stuff in the studio. ... Read More

This is a brilliant live set, organized by Irish-American folklorist and historian Mick Moloney and recorded for public TV in a concert at the Irish Arts Center in New York City. Liz Carroll, Karan Casey, John Doyle, Seamus Egan, Joanie Madden and others join Moloney for a lively tour of various trad styles (from nimble reels and haunting ballads to comic ditties and chunky old-time bluegrass. It's great stuff. If you like Irish trad, you couldn't ask for a better concert than this! (DJ Joe Sixpack, Slipcue Guide To World Music)
