I don't use either of those adjectives lightly. I heard this guy playing in a hotel lounge back when this CD was just made and he was incredible. It was like finding a 2-carat diamond in a sandbox. His rendition of "You always hurt the one you love" is my favorite. I'm still raving about him to friends and wondering how I can get him to come play in Charlottesville!

The first time I heard track two on this CD, I decided it wasn't worth anyone else ever playing the piano. That is not to say that it is the only decent track on the album - far from it; the world has never heard funkier or more explosive piano playing. This is not for those who like their jazz gentle and inoffensive. Rather, it is a mind blowing example of O.P. at his dynamite best, supported by some of the most dangerous bass playing and drumming (catch the opening twenty seconds of 'Windmills of your mind', for example) that has ever been put to disc in the studio. A CD to uplift the soul and clear the head like a violent sneeze, but don't listen while you're driving as muscle spasms may ensue.

Cabaret performer Frank Dain has a warm intensity in his voice that suits the romantic nature of the songs here, including "Night and Day," "You Go to My Head," and particularly "It Never Was You." I'm not a fan of combining two songs to make a dramatic statement, but Dain makes a strong case for his pairing of Empty Chairs" (Don McLean) and "It Never Entered My Mind." Ballads predominate, but Dain and arranger/musical director Rick Jensen swing gently, but persuasively, in the exceptional "I Thought About You." I haven't had this one off my CD player for the last week.

During his concert banter with the audience, Frank Sinatra oftentimes brought up his start - along with other popular vocalists - in the music business as a "saloon singer."

This 1981 release brings his phenomenal career full-circle - back to those times of struggling to learn the art of performing - with songs lamenting love lost, potential slipping away and life sliding into the shadowy crevices of last-calls at the local bars.

Produced by Don Costa and arranged/conducted by Gordon Jenkins, the storytelling by Sinatra is spellbinding, especially on Monday Morning Quarterback, I Loved Her, Thanks for the Memory and Bang Bang (My Baby Shot Me Down).

Though rich in sadness, it is Sinatra stripping away the years of fame and demonstrating how he became an American ... Read More

Well, I was not expecting to like this one. Its SO old, and very classic (Rodgers and Hart.) But one good thing about it being Rodgers and Hart, is it has lovely lyrics. Clever and witty on every song. Mark Twains book was done justice I think, but I've never read the book. I would suggest this to classic lovers, and newer Broadway fans who want to hear a`"classic" other than Oklahoma. This is a good one. The other great thing about this CD is you get not only A Connecticut Yankee, but also highlights from two other Rodgers and Hart musicals: Higher and Higher and By Jupiter. AWSOME. Favorite Song: "To Keep My Love Alive"

Rodgers and Hart wrote many poignant classics and most are here. This is taken from their earlier two separate LP releases(too bad all the numbers from both records could not be included - I especially miss -"With a Song in My Heart"). Rodgers and Hart had a lighter side as well and it is well represented here by the songs - "He and She", "To Keep My Love Alive", and "Why Can't I" - which have that magic Hart touch. Favourites like "Where Or When"(Rogers favourite song of all that he wrote with Larry),"Bewitched", "Spring Is Here", and "I Didn't Know What Time It Was"(one of the greatest love songs of all time)are here. The supporting cast of Max Morath and Lucy Simon are winning additions as well. If you can track down this compact disc - do so - it is well worth getting it.
