Except for the style used in "Come un bel di di maggio," this recording is worthy of a perfect rating. Of the selections on this CD, Salvatore Licitra's performance is especially good in "Dio! mi potevi scagliar" from Otello, the two selections from Cavalleria Rusticana, especially "Mamma, quel vino e generoso," "E la solita storia del pastore" from L'Arlesiana, "Amor ti vieta" from Fedora, and, suprisingly, the bonus track, Rossini's "La Danza."

The quality of the performance of "La Danza" was exceptional. As anyone who has heard La Danza accompanied by the piano knows, the pianist is just as important as the singer, and has the ability to either showcase the singer, or ruin the performance despite the singers efforts; in this case, the pianist is just as good as Salvatore ... I sit here at my computer and try to think of superlatives adequate to accurately describe this album....and there just aren't any. It is worthy to be the best selling classical album of all time....but it's more than that. It's just a must have, a collection to soothe the savage breast. For those times when I have lost hope, when I am past care.....I will sit with closed eyes and listen to this. And revive my soul.....

This remarkable collection of arias, with consistently high sound quality sound, was my introduction to opera, an addiction that turned feverish. Most singular, however, is the reaction of anyone who hears it. I have had it for 8-9 years and all those friends who wrote down the title have been unable to find it. On a whim, I tried a search on Amazon, and now have a long list of people to call. It is rich, lustrous music, that always leaves me with my arm hairs raised. The ultimate test. Get it and addict your friends, minus the frustration of not having a source for them to find it.

A stand out from a career of remarkable achievements, Luciano Pavarotti
historically performs before a half a million in NYC's Central Park. The digital true to life live recording of June 26th. 1993 preserves that evening for posterity. Besides superb engineering he has the support of the world class NY Philharmonic that savors the occasion. The carefully selected program includes a few opera arias, but the majority are beautifully arranged Italian songs. Throughout, Pavarotti's voice is consistently up to the task, sweet and distinct, and he really lets it rip when required. The crowd pleaser, over played "Nessa Dorma" has come off better elsewhere! However, the overall program is captivating, exhibiting why Pavarotti has popularized opera to greater audiences.
