This album - Nitty Gritty Dirt Band's 9th - was originally released in 1975. The Dirt Band had their major break-through in 1970 with their excellent 5th album, "Uncle Charlie & his dog Teddy" (which included the hit single "Mr. Bojangles", as well as "House at Pooh corner" and several other memorable songs). "Uncle Charlie" was followed by another excellent album titled "All the good times" (1971). The following year saw the release of "Will the circle be unbroken", a triple-LP concept album, that departed in style from the previous albums, in that it was an all acoustic album, consisting of bluegrass, folk, and old country music, performed by the Dirt Band together with several famous musicians (e.g., Roy Acuff, Mother Maybelle Carter, Earl Scruggs, Doc Watson, and others). ... Fans will quibble about the omission of this favorite song or that, especially with a band that has been around as long as this one has, but for someone who remembers them vaguely or not at all, this CD is a welcome introduction to a band that has produced a lot of good music over the years. The major hits are here along with enjoyable covers of songs by top songwriters like Randy Newman and Jackson Browne,a former member.Indeed, their version of "Pooh Corner" is actually more enjoyable than that of Loggins and Messina to these ears.In short,a generous sample of solid meat and potatoes music.Dig in.

Having discovered The Nylons in 1986 while in high school (I was in Jazz Choir so we all just fell head over heels with this music) this was the long anticipated 2-year wait for the follow-up to 1987's Happy Together. I was working at a record store (we actually STILL had records then) when this album came out. I remember buying the first CD that came into the store and subjecting my fellow employees to what I was expecting to be a typically fantastic journey into vocal acrobatics. Instead I was greeted with a highly slick, heavily synth-enhanced sound that sounded NOTHING like I was used to from the premiere A Capella foursome. This was to be the final album in which all four original "studio" Nylons performed on - the group had two other bass singers prior to Arnold Robinson joining, and Paul Cooper (their ... Read More

I was listening to this one (a tape back then) as I was driving to and from the spa after recovering from a knee operation in 1989. Those classics are beautiful and there are even two unusual rockers thrown in. I recommend the entire "trilogy" of the 1989 compilations - this album, Our Love Song and Rare Orbison. Along with All-Time Greatest Hits and Mystery Girl, this is practically The Essential Roy. All you in fact do need.

If you don't have The Nylons first album, this one is a great introduction to an amazing group. This four-man a cappella group, using only percussion and vocal talent, brings songs like "Drift Away" and "All I Have To Do Is Dream" to vibrant life. This album also contains two of my favorite Nylons ballads, "Another Night Like This," which is hauntingly lovely, and "Busy Tonight," a plea for acknowledgement of not-so-unrequited love. Treat yourself by getting to know this group--you won't be able to stop bopping to the beat!

If you love country/rock music, you NEED to own this CD. It is, in my opinion, one of the true treasures of the country/rock era (the late 60's through mid 70's). Although there were no big radio hits culled from it (The old Everlys classic, "Dream" did get some airplay.), it hangs together beautifully, and is indeed one of the most evocotive albums of that or any era, each song flowing seamlessly into the next, often aided by snippets of "found" sounds like sea gulls, wind, rain and thunder. The bagpipe fade-out of "Battle Of New Orleans" alone is worth the price of the CD. It mesmerized me as a 17-year-old in 1975, and it continues to bowl me over today. Indeed, "mesmerizing" is as apt a one-word description of this work of art as any. With tunes like "Dream" and "Bayou Jubilee", the Dirt Band defines "country/rock". ... Read More
