I'm going out on a limb and hope my review gets at the top of the list. These other reviews, which are mostly bad, are NOT for this 4CD Box Set of Don Gibson's music. So pay no attention to the 3 and 4 stars. This box set deserves 5+ stars. Don Gibson was a brilliant songwriter although he had no more than a grade school education. He also had a unique singing voice. It was beautiful on those soulful ballads he wrote and sang. And when we heard him on the radio, back in the good old days, we knew immediately it was him singing.
He doesn't deserve to have any reviews under his music be actually for any book. And I am mad about it. Just wish that there were something else I could do.

They might have labeled Ray Charles, The Genius, based on the song I Can't Stop Loving You, and the Ray Charles Country Album which it was on, but remember, Don Gibson wrote it with no more than a 2nd grade education. According to the booklet that comes with this box set and the other two, he came in from school one day when he was 8 years old and in the second grade, and told his mama that school was a waste of time and he wasn't going back. He didn't. (I hate to tell you what would have happened to me if I came in the house and told my mama that; in ANY grade. But then I was NO genius. I refused to dissect a frog in Science Class in High School and when the teacher said to me "If you don't dissect that frog, I'll have to give you a failing grade." I said "give it to me 'cause I ain't ... Read More

Barry Banks is certainly a contender for one of the best tenors around. THis is a great example of coloratura and legato line which is very well executed in a rather booming tenor voice. I just saw Mr. Banks in "The Elixer of Love" and he was stupendous. This is a large tenor voce in the theatre which alas is difficult to capture in a studio recording...you have to take my word. THe translations are often odd as they generally are, but this recording is certainly worth having. (although I prefer in the original language)

As I've found with most recordings in this series, the selection of works on this disc set is good - while there are certainly many more choices not included here, I can't really say any of those that were included are bad choices.

The quality of the performances varies. Those works which I am more familiar with seemed to be of lower quality to me. The quality of the recording, however, is of poor quality - either a high level of static or a low level of recording volume contribute to a consistant background hiss when listening to this album. Headphones are not recommended with this set.

If you're looking for an intro to choral works and might use this as a sampler or springboard, I'd recommend this set. However, there are better discs out there for that purpose ... Read More

this music is enjoyable for anyone who likes to listen to religious music with the unique sound of a church in a small southern town. The songs are familiar but the sound is likely to bring back memories of small town southern churches. The instruments heard in the music are fiddles, banjos, and other different instruments.

This seems to be one f the better installments in the Chandos series of classic operas in English. Frankly, it's a retrograde project, given that it took decades to convince the English to hear operas in their original language. But Figaro is full of wit, so an excellent English translation could be fun. Here, it's mostly not. The translation is fairly literal and clunky, showing no attempt to exhibit native English wit.

The performance is a warm, traditional one, which is refreshing. The characters sing with British accents, and that's damaging to the Latin flavor so essential to the household setup and class divisions. All the singers are pleasant without being first rate; they tend to be too polite iwth both the comedy and mock melodrama. In all, this was worth one listen, but I doubt ... Read More
