I've been waiting for something like this for awhile, and overall it exceeds expectations.

Caveat: This is definitely not a "greatest hits" collection, and as such it'll be received better by fans than by the casual listener. There are some of the "hits" (Once Bitten, Cleveland Rocks, etc.), but it's more a sort of retrospective that covers a lot of unreleased stuff, undoubtedly of more interest to fans.

Having said all that, Ian says he's an acquired taste, and that's true, so I bet most people buying this collection already have most, if not all of his albums. In that context it wouldn't really have made sense to put all those familiar, favorite songs on here exactly as they appear on the albums. The radio edits are interesting in their own rights - little lyric ... Read More

This CD has some great moments, but overall, it isn't quite as good as I'd hoped it would be. The first 3 Derringer songs (Guitars & Women, On My Way Up, Party At The Hotel) are great, I especially like On My Way Up. RnR Hoochie Koo, however doesn't equal the old "Derringer live" version, nor do "Let Me In" or "Beyond The Universe". Perhaps that's more a testament to that recording, than a slight on this one. I was thrilled to see Jump,Jump,Jump on here, one of my favorite Derringer songs. The guitar work is GREAT, but the vacals were pretty marginal. Rick's guitar is overall outstanding, the guy can flat play. But the singing is marginal. I suppose the radio broadcast doesn't get the same kind of overdubbing as a formal recording.

Regarding the othe material, Ian Hunter's ... Read More

195.San Marco 1527-1740 from: Gloria Dei Cantores

Very nice performances, with clean crisp articulation and generally good sound. My only quibble is with the tempo of the Andrea Gabrieli Magnificat -- it seems a bit too brisk to me, given the space in which it would have been performed and the likely distance between the three choirs in San Marco, an effect which I believe Gloriae Dei Cantores is trying to replicate. There were times when the sound became "muddy," and a slower tempo would have mitigated that effect. Some might also argue with doubling the TTBB choir with low brass instruments (with no other doubling in the piece), but that's really a matter of personal taste. Gabrieli would have used whatever he had on hand, so if all he had were sackbuts, sackbuts he would have used.

This is a good investment if you're looking for music ... Read More

The reason why everyone who has ever heard music by Mr. Bert Kaempfert has tapping toes is evident in this two-album CD! I can't tell you how much I missed his music, but I can tell you that I have almost every CD recording of Mr. Kaempfert's extraordinary and talented production. What a fine class of work this man created! His trumpet blowing is refreshing and delightful. His guitar playing is incredible and smart. Mr. Kaempfert has never fall short of remarkable when he composes (or scores) music. I was young when I remembered my first toe-tapping experience. I don't forget music that made me do this. Therefore, you too won't forget that it was no other than Mr. Bert Kaempfert, one of the finest 20th century composer of toe-tapping music. Enjoy!

I accidently stumbled across the sixth volume in my favorite electronic series one day at the record store. I didn't even realize there was a sixth volume until I discovered it. Of course I bought it on sight. I love the Plastic compilations series. Granted the songs selected for these albums are edit versions but the songs themselves are just fabulous. The sixth volume is no exception to the greatness of the series. I particularly loved Way Out West's "Mindcircus" (Gabriel & Dresden Mix/plastic edit). Yeah, the dance version can be found on the fifth Plastic compilation but this version of "Mindcircus" is vastly superior to the dance version. I just absolutely love the heavenly female vocals. Although I am no Timo Maas fan (I think he is vastly overrated like Fatboy Slim), I dug "To Get Down". It is one of ... Read More

Like the guy before me mentioned, the individual tracks on this CD are chopped up from their original lengths. This actually wouldn't be too bad if the CD were mixed, but it isn't! It seems like the people who put this CD out were just trying to cram a bunch of songs on one CD.

Despite my generally negative review so far I actually liked the music on this CD, so for that it gets a 4 star rating. I see this CD as a sampler though, kind of like a radio station on a CD. I've discovered some cool tracks from listening to it, which of course, I had to acquire the full length tracks from other sources :) The stand out tracks for me are:

1. Crystal Method - Born Too Slow (NuBreed Remix)
2. Layo & Bushwacka! - Deep South (Oakenfold Remix)
3. Plastika - Absolut
7. Conjure ... Read More
