I listened to this album - circa 2006 - with mixed emotions but without disappointment. Some of the big names have altered their normal styles, but each piece is above average and many are just great interpretations totally in synchrony with the big band and blues sound. It has the last original from Harrison, a Knoffler, Cale and Clapton you wouldn't expect but which pleasantly surprises, a superb Taj Mahal and an amazing Jamiroquai interpretation of 'I'm in the mood for love'. Yes there are the big names, but what most people haven't commented on is the great music from the Jools Holland Band itself. They have taken the big band and blues sounds to the next level and every song in this album has gained because of it. The experiment has worked really well and I don't think there are many like ... "Supernatural Superserious" is the token hit, and "Hollow Man" is decent. The rest of the cd is just noise, and the dvd is utterly worthless. Jeez, I thought the dvd would at least have some concert footage or something, but I guess it's just there to justify a higher price!

It's obvious that this record was done on the cheap, but that said, what is striking is how profoundly the songs shine through, with rich and sometimes deceptively simple narratives. The allusions are to emotions that have obviously been deeply experienced -and subsequently thought out, without losing in the translation. Direct to the point of crystallization. McCullough's voice is a thick wash of molassess that conveys alternately anger, despair, hope and the humorousness of it all. You can unravel the words on many levels, but like an effective song should be, the initial hit evokes a purely raw response. A truly promising debut record, and I for one am eagerly anticipating the next installment.

Accelerate can be one of those albums which fans, upset with R.E.M.'s last few releases, may judge too highly, throwing out words like comeback just to describe a vague adult-rock, easy going consistency in a way which almost insults some of their finer intricacies.

I didn't like this album when I first got it. On a lark I decided to upgrade to the remastered/remixed edition of the album with the bonus tracks. I don't know what was wrong with me before. This has become one of my favorite Split Enz albums. It sounds marvelous as well. Evidently the original mastertapes were missing and the ones used for previous editions sounded pretty bad so Enz member Eddie Rayner went back to the session tapes and remixed these/remastered them. They kick butt.

In addition to the classic "I See Red" we also get "Master Plan", "Famous People" and "Give It a Whirl" one of the first Neil Finn-Tim Finn tunes (we also get their other collaboration "Mind Over Matter" and Neil's "Carried Away" which I don't recall hearing before except years ago on a friend's vinyl version of "Frenzy"). ...
