Despite more lineup changes than I can count, Newfoundland's answer to the Irish Rovers continues to be consistently entertaining.

Still under the guiding hand of founder/singer/guitarist Con O'Brien (the only original member), the band went to Newfie counterparts Great Big Sea to create its latest project. Singer Alan Doyle produced Southern Shore and the entire band sings on the rollicking, fun "Downtown Girl". That song aside, Doyle doesn't really bring much new to the table, since he was working with a band well established in song and spirit.

There's the usual mix of Irish favourites (Mick Maguire, Town of Ballybay), some songs unique to the Newfoundland (Six Horse-Power Coaker) and a bit of a tribute to recently departed Irish folk music legend Tommy Makem. Town ... Read More

Jim Fidler is a remarkable talent, as the people of Newfoundland know, but his music is hard to describe. It is heavily rooted in a traditional sound, with a large Newfoundland/Irish influence, but it also has a touches of classical, bluegrass, reggae, pop and many other influences. Fidler wrote all the songs and tunes on the album, is an excellent singer, and for good measure, performs as his own backup band on most of the tracks, singing lead and back-up vocals, and playing: guitar, mandolin, drums, keyboards, bodhran, Appalachian Indian frame drum, bass, accordion, whistle, tenor banjo, and, of course, fiddle. And he plays them all exceptionally well. In particular, he makes very effective use of the various drums and has tremendous drive in his flute playing. A great album..

Mark Bacino returns with more pure pop... His songs would not sound out of place on mid-70's AM radio. Obvious influences are The Beatles, Paul McCartney, Tod Rundgren, Elton John...

But he has a 90's sheen, with similarities to Jellyfish, Ben Folds, Kristian Hoffman and David Mead.

So do ya want an underrated CD to add to your collection? Well kids, stop right here because sackrine is here to rock your butt like a ride on the timberwolf. Sacrin is a mix of styles that most wouldn't find appealing, but my readers aren't most people, they are the creme de la creme of music society. Who is my average reader? Great question, thank you for asking. My readers are broken up into two major groups. First, you have the tier right on par with my coolcrunkness. That would include the captain, Jabs, Keyboard mafioso Burns, Kroll, JB, Ralph Macchio, and Mr. Franks who owns a great norweigan sandwich shop on the east side. The second group of readers are those striving to climb the ladder of life by living la vida nooka. Yeah, I played off a Ricky Martin song. The normal person does that ... Read More

I have to say, I was really looking forward to this release. The Lassie's last full CD was the wonderful "Pacifico", which sounded like the pre-"Pet Sounds" Beach Boys would have if they were a Christian-based Shoegazer band. (Huh???) When they are at their best, Lassie Foundation are all head spinning fuzz and feedback, discordant guitars played against wonderful melodies all delivered with gusto with the ubiquitous (and at times very silly sounding) high falsetto vocals.
All of those elements are present on "The El Dorado L.P" and, as such, if you were a fan of the last album this one is at least worthy of giving a listen. Songs like "Every Line Has Let You Inside of Me" and "The Battle of Vernon" are noisy little pop masterpieces. "Let Your Boy Come Back" is breezy horn and guitars pop that ... Read More
