The late Dick Wellstood was a musician who absorbed just about every style of jazz, and put it all together in his own eclectic mix of stride, blues, ragtime, bop (yes, bop!)and whatever else one cares to mention. On this live set from Hanratty's in New York, Wellstood comes across as a master musician - a performer with a total understanding of the tradition as well as with an ability to connect the past with the present, and indeed, with the future. The playing is never anything but brilliant, from the subdued ballads to the all-out stride bonanzas, and the choice of tunes is top notch. Another aspect, which is probably an aquired taste, is the piano sound. CD was great; however, I prefer DVD. It would have been much better to have seen and heard instead of hearing only. Seeing someone hit those high notes while hearing the beautiful harmonizing voices are simply icing on the cake!!! Extremely talented!!!!

I've only just bought this attractively produced boxed set, and cannot recommend it highly enough. It features several Nashville artists on tour in Europe in April 1964, at the height of Beatlemania and the Mersey beat, in what was a major effort by the country music industry to promote another musical fashion. Several RCA artists featured on the tour including the Anita Kerr singers, Bobby Bare, Chet Atkins, and the Blue Boys, but the main attraction, and the real reason behind the tour and, indeed, this boxed set, was the great Jim Reeves, who, at the time of the tour, had done more than any other singer to take country music outside of its US confines and make it popular world-wide. Yeah, sure these tracks are great, but then again, the producers of this compilation could have picked ANY 12 tracks from the Gramavision years and the results would have been superior. Don't waste your entertainment dollar--start by picking up the Gramavision releases Still Warm, Blue Matter, and Loud Jazz and prepared to be blown away. The other Gramavision releases, Electric Outlet and Flat Out, are not essential, but still good. Fans of Scofield's fusion years should also pick up I Can See Your House From Here, Scofield's dueling guitars date with Pat Metheny.
