Wonderful to have preserved a live performance of a work so
suited to Caballe's vocal splendour, she brings Arabella to
life, and even her sister raises to the occasion. Of course
Nimsgern is no Fischer Dieskau, but who is ?

The problem with the music of our time,is that we don't have the equivalent of what FATS WALLER represented in those days.FATS was a talented pianist,a fabulous entertainer who didn't take himself seriously. The key to his personality was his spontaneity. If these 1935 radio transcriptions are so enjoyable there are many reasons;this cd is like going to your favorite uncle who used to play the piano and tell jokes in between.FATS was not a great singer, but somehow his voice comes across beautifully.Everything is of interest here, but the stride piano playing is the standout.Somehow, you are inclined to think that the bottle of gin was standing by near him ,but he didn't touch it until the end of these recordings.

It's very interesting because they present most of the best jazzmen of the period, the early fifties. I love it, I had only a few tapes of the old LPs: great!

Many Hollywood musical stars never really got to make recordings. It's unfortunate too because some of them had really knockout voices. Vivian Blaine was one of them. Unfortunately, this CD does not show Ms. Blaine at her best.

Famous for "State Fair"(1945) and "Guys And Dolls"(1955), Vivian originally made these recordings at a concert in 1983. Yes, Vivian was older then, but she screeched many of her songs, the band was not the greatest, and the audience was too noisy. That is why I don't buy concert CDs too much. It rarely shows the stars at their best. Still though, the CD is great nostalgia, and if you must have something by Vivian Blaine this may be for you. I recommend searching for some of her vinyl work she did in the late 1950s though...
