This never seems to make it into any "top" lists of this very dramatic short opera. I have heard the famous Janet Baker/Anthony Lewis recording for Decca. It is a fine version which I recommend. But it simply isn't as colourful as this one. Jessye Norman is a perfectly wonderful Dido. Perhaps not as moving in `drooping wings' as Janet Baker, but still in strong competition. Leppard directs better too. Anthony Lewis had a more plain-sounding orchestra, and the sound wasn't as opulent.
Four Stars.

This is a lovely and vibrant performance of Dido and Aeneas. There are no boring moments! The singers convey the emotion of the tragedy while Martin Pearlman does not allow the music to drag as do some conductors. My only problem with the recording is that Nancy Maultsby uses a bit too much vibrato for Baroque singing.

I've just bought this album after a very long search! It was worth the wait and the effort for this is a great collection of music by the greatest of composers: Bach!

I once read that Bach's Secular Cantatas give a hint of what a Bach opera might have been like. After listening to this album I must say that I fully agree with that, these cantatas seem much lighter (somehow operistic) than Bach's "regular" sacred cantatas!

Each of the cantatas in this album is played wonderfully and the recording is fabulous! Jacobs expertly leads an ideal group of singers, among them Andreas Scholl (countertenor), whose singing is always fantastic!!!

This is a gorgeous and very interesting album! If you like Bach's vocal music buy it...if you can find it!!!

This is the best CD of modern 20th century guitar works that I have heard in a long time. The Kernis simply can't be described in words, and the Reich will appeal to just about anybody. Note to Frank Zappa fans, however: THIS IS NOT THE CD YOU ARE LOOKING FOR! Yes, there is a piece written by Zappa on this CD, but it is a super short (under a minute) serial piece that he wrote when he was 18, and according to the liner notes, he doesn't hold it in high regard. Unless you a completist, this Zappa will dissapoint. But if you like modern classical guitar, this CD is A++ must buy.
