The single disc version of this CD is probably a perfect retro pop CD. The two disc version is icing on the cake. Probably the most inspirational core set of material from any modern band coming out of the post punk, new wave / MTV era in the eighties. The newer material is different but just as good. If you have nothing, this is probably the best place to start.

By 1985, I had already lived a few years absorbing this being called: R.E.M. The only reason that I was ahead of the pack was due to my move to Virginia two years prior. The Music scene in the South was very fertile {New Bands had a chance of Radio play} and the Club/Bar circuit was rich with Veterans such as Gregg Allman and Robin Trower, but was also generous to new Bands such as: The Georgia Satelites and Red Ryder, that were playing throughout the Southlands. The early 1980's DID show promise, away from the constant deluge of: "Thriller." R.E.M. had been through my town already, and my Concert memories of the show in Virginia Beach with The Dream Syndicate as the opener in the hot summer of 1984, had already passed into the stuff of Legends. Waht I really want is to give 5 stars for the music, and 2.5 stars for the sound quality of the CD. It was great to listen to some of the REM songs from for their IRS label times, like "Fall on me" and "perfect circle"...I've been wanting to listen to some early REM for a long time, and this CD has a great collection put together just for that... HOWEVER, whoever mixed this CD must've been on crack. it's FLAT! one of the worst sounding CD's I've ever heard. There are no up/dwon tonal passages, everything is at the SAME volume level, and almost NO BASS! When I 1st listened to it, I thought my stereo or speakers had a problem. Listening to the music via Winamp per PC with EQ adjusted, it's more tolerable, but the lack of low freq passages is still ridiculous. I'm sure the original album versions ... Read More

Peter Buck's opening notes on the third R.E.M. album struck the mood; ominous and cutting. "Feeling Gravity's Pull" chucked the murky atmosphere of Murmur and the poppy jangle so predominant on Reckoning, replacing it with a haunting crush of sound. "Fables of The Reconstruction" was R.E.M.'s darkest album to date and spoke of tensions the band was having at the time. It's also, by contrast, it's also their most southern. Songs like the horn-heavy "Can't Get There From Here" (ever ask for directions in rural Georgia?), "Auctioneer (Another Engine)," and "Driver Eight" - a train song for heaven's sake - dig into the myth of the deep south, and legendary folk producer Joe Boyd highlights the right elements. I first heard this CD in my carpooler's car on the way to work. I loved it and immediately put it on my Christmas CD List for 2007. Unfortunately, nobody could find it, so I waited and when it was finally available, I jumped on it. I love the songs that were selected, some were new to me, and I love the way the guys put their own twists on them. My favorite is "I Hope That I Don't Fall In Love With You" but they're all good. I'm hoping that they'll do a follow-up.

If you want to listen to a purely instrumental and acoustic R.E.M. tribute, you should try this. The performers have given the songs a new, country-like interpretation, and some are hardly to identify with the originals. But that's a good thing. I have all R.E.M. instrumental tribute CDs, but this is, together with Alan Pinches' tribute, by far the best one. My favourites are "You Are The Everything", "Endgame" and "Half A World Away".
