Kudos to the editor of this collection. You may like some of these tenors, you may not like some of them, but that's not the point. The point is to introduce you to a bunch of tenors in a minimum amount of time and space, and this is what this recording does splendidly. With few exceptions, each tenor featured here gets to sing the piece (or one of the pieces) he is most famous for. These are, obviously, NOT all of the tenors you can imagine, but they well represent the standard tenor repertory presented on this disc.

Having an Amazon sales ranking of 100,000 at the time of this review, not reviewed upon, it seems that Amazon is trying to hide this wonderful gem of a recording from the eyes of fans of good music. This recording is part of the famous operetta cycle, all conducted by Otto Ackermann and with very similar casts. It is also this cycle that launched Nicolai Gedda, one of the finest tenors of the 20th century from an unknown star to a tenor par excellence renown all over the musical world.
The Land of Smiles is one of the late operettas that Lehar wrote, devoid of the joyful, high-spirited music characteristics that prevailed Lehar's writing style before the first world war. It is imbued with a slight pathos that makes it so attractive and wonderful, as well as exotic pentatonic tunes that create a wonderfully ... Read More

I purchased this disc several years as one my first opera purchases. I had been turned onto to "opera" by seeing the first three tenors concert. I went to purchase additional three tenor material, then this disc caught my eye. Having worked in a record store in my youth, some of the names were familiar to me, so down went the Amex card, and off to my car I went. All of the tenors on this disc are wonderful singers, Bjorling, Corelli, Gigli etc. but one stands out above the rest - Giuseppe Di Stefano - I must have had my CD player on random, because the second aria that came up was Thomas's "Addio, Mignon" (track #8) sung by Di Stefano - I was awestruck, I never realized that the human voice could sing with such beauty and feeling. Since that time I have purchased just about everything Di Stefano has ever recorded. ... Read More

Treat yourself to these wonderful records (this one, plus the other two volumes). It's the best collection of Viennese operetta I know. The voices aren't the best--the tenor especially can be squally at times. No, this isn't Tauber or Schwarzkopf, but enjoy it for what it is: three hours of sheer pleasure.
