This is one of the most annoying world music albums out there. Next to the Rough Guide to Yodel,it's custom-made to drive away unwanted guests,solicitors,and relatives overstaying their welcomes. Putumayo had an interesting concept:cover songs from around the world. As a concept album,it works in theory. In practice,it doesn't do so well. There are a few highlights-but they are few and far between. The album works as novelty,like the "Annoying Music Show" compilations,or the Leonard Nimoy/William Shatner album. Ladysmith Black Mambazo's "Ain't no sunshine" and "People get ready" are wonderful,and sound like gospel songs. Les Go's cover of Hall&Oates is given an Afropop vibe. I like the Four Seasons, but this is a waste of money. They redid a lot of their songs.

Britain is a great place for double-CD compilations on every conceivable theme and now we have a compilation of happy songs. Like many themed compilations, the musical styles vary considerably - you need an eclectic taste in music to enjoy every track here. Five decades of music are represented - the sixties, seventies, eighties, nineties and the start of the new millennium. With all such compilations, it is possible to argue about what could have been included, but there is no doubt that every song here fits the compilation's basic theme. A classic album from the 70's. I have an old cassette tape of this (snapped!)and have been scouring record shops for years for any vinyl/ CD versions. Amazon UK didn't have it listed, but I got it so easily from Amazon USA & it arrived within a week. Exactly the same tracks in the same original order. Pity about no album sleeve stuff, but that's CD's for you! The sound quality, especially on Ipod, is superb.
