This CD surprised me when I first listened to it. It is among the most beautiful and peaceful music I have ever listened to. The song, "Dear Father", written by Neil Diamond for the movie, Johnathan Livingston Seagull, is my absolute favorite on the entire CD. All songs on this CD are beautiful and it is a very good value for the money. It's nice to be surprised by a CD now and then. This album is very soothing and is wonderful when you need to unwind and want to relax. Great to listen to before bedtime or as you are dropping off to sleep. I recommend this CD for all considering the fact that we live in very troubled times since the September 11th, 2001, terrorist attacks on the USA.

When the Met did its first production of Poulenc's Dialogues of the Carmelites in 1977, there was only one recording of this opera available in the U.S., the one recorded during the composer's lifetime. Then came a video from Australia in the late '80s, a spiffy new CD set from the Lyon Opera in 1992, and with the composer's centennial in 1999 several other videos and soundtracks, including ones in German and the original Italian (for the La Scala premiere in 1957). It was Poulenc himself who wanted the opera to be sung in translation, and Chandos has honored his wish by committing to CD a fine production by the English National Opera. This succinctly-titled version uses a new libretto with numerous subtle revisions that make the text easier to sing, e.g., the safe house has been moved to ... Read More

A wonderful mix of themes and "ocean" music. Great choral work, too--esp. "What Shall We Do With A Drunken Sailor". You have to get up and move your feet! This is a "must-have" CD for lovers of the sea.

If you really want to get to know Rusalka, find the earlier Chalabala set. It better conveys the fairytale-like, dreamy quality of the music with masterful conducting from Chalabala. Neumann has good ideas and the blasting moments are greatly aided by the excellent recording quality, but is a bit heavy-handed on the score. I also prefer Subrtova to Benackova, the former having a more girlish, lyrical tone more suited to the role.
This being said, this is a really solid choice. The dryads trio cannot be done better. Benackova has a silvery and beautiful tone and gives a very convincing Rusalka. She gives a wonderful Song to the Moon, although I prefer Subrtova's soft, bittersweet singing. Novak has sturdy tone and gives an excellent account of the Water Golin role, although his portrayal is not as ... Read More

I realised today that I should have recommended this opera recording some years ago. However, I am happy to report that I am still listening to this recording and enjoying it.

The recording is vivid and The Parley of Instruments is very much to the fore in this recording. Thomas Arne's score contains a number of instruments - strings and basso continuo, of course, but also 2 flutes, 2 Baroque clarinets, 3 oboes, 3 bassoons, 2 natural horns (spectacularly played in the aria "Amid a thousand racking woes"!) and 2 natural trumpets. Okay, this does sound like the score of an opera by Haydn or Mozart, doesn't it? Well, Artaxerxes is first and foremost an Opera Seria, even though the arias of Arbaces and Mandane were written in the "Galant" style. Indeed, the opera sound peculiarly 'Haydn-esque', at ...
