The single disc version of this CD is probably a perfect retro pop CD. The two disc version is icing on the cake. Probably the most inspirational core set of material from any modern band coming out of the post punk, new wave / MTV era in the eighties. The newer material is different but just as good. If you have nothing, this is probably the best place to start.

I noticed all the complaints on sound. So my 5-star rating is really for an import, "The Best of R.E.M." With 16 songs the songlist is representative of R.E.M.'s early years, though there are no rarities on it. It starts with "Chronic Town," then proceeds with 3 songs from each album chronologically from "Murmur" through "Document." The sound quality is fine, although a little lower than most newer CDs, so you have to turn it up a little. Waht I really want is to give 5 stars for the music, and 2.5 stars for the sound quality of the CD. It was great to listen to some of the REM songs from for their IRS label times, like "Fall on me" and "perfect circle"...I've been wanting to listen to some early REM for a long time, and this CD has a great collection put together just for that... HOWEVER, whoever mixed this CD must've been on crack. it's FLAT! one of the worst sounding CD's I've ever heard. There are no up/dwon tonal passages, everything is at the SAME volume level, and almost NO BASS! When I 1st listened to it, I thought my stereo or speakers had a problem. Listening to the music via Winamp per PC with EQ adjusted, it's more tolerable, but the lack of low freq passages is still ridiculous. I'm sure the original album ... Read More

I must have loaned this CD to someone. I have all of REM's major releases, many of the hits and b-sides, a few boot legs, etc. I saw REM at a 400 seat venu and a 30,000 seat venu and a few in between. I know this album is a bit over produced considering murmur and reckoning, but I still love this album.

Like a lot of music fans, I have turned completely back to vinyl, and the versions of this GREAT album that I have found are all messed up. I want Rhino to get the rights from IRS to allow them to do a great 180g pressing as they have done for some other great '80's records, with the fantastic "Pleased to Meet Me" by the Replacements as an example. I am not, nor ever was a huge REM fan, but I have always loved this album. "Fall on Me" unlike a lot of '80's music still sounds as good to me today as it did as a sophmore in college. As I have gotten older and sadly realized that the music from my generation paled in comparison to the one just before us, I take some consolation in the fact that we have a few winners.
