1.Tito Beltrán:Romantica from: Silva America

Tito Beltran's 'Romantica', which I found in the old power plant culture house at Baltimore's Inner Harbor 4 years ago, is a ravishing exposition of a melting tenor striving at his best. What caused me to buy it was the fact that his repertory consists of 3 of Jussi Björling's Swedish favourites, 'Till Havs', 'Ack Värmeland, du sköna' and the originally Danish 'I de lyse nætter' (Swedish: 'Sommarnatt'), all sung in Swedish, his second native tongue. His tone rings beautifully, and apart from his at times overwhelming vibrato I find his version a refreshing and sympathetic alternative and artistically a parallel to Carlo Bergonzi: a humble artist who tells stories in song without overshadowing his art.

Used Price: $9.15

I ordered despite seeing on line before purchase that most of the selections were in the massive, beautifully executed Pavarotti Edition. I hoped the extras would be worth the expense. Unfortunately, the execution was shoddy. The set in packaged in flimsy cardboard. The discography is limited to his Universal-labels sound recordings-no DVDS, no EMI, no RCA, and, of course, none of the many unauthorized issues of opera-house performance recordings. The biography is meagre, the booklet attains its length by providing multiple translations, and unlike the Edition, song texts and translations are absent. Pavarotti lovers should buy the Edition; at best the Story is for those unfamiliar with the great tenor.

I came across this cd at my local library and decided to take it home on a whim. All I can say about this album, is that everybody who even remotely enjoys lively opera/italian music deserves to hear it. The music and atmosphere rendered are absolutely beautiful. Like other reviewers said, the music is not heavy or complex ... but it is very playful and emotionally involving. The artists really don't go out of their way to try and bring out a never-before-heard rendition. Instead, they just let the music flow. More true to the original intent in my opinion. I noticed the main vocalist is listed as a tenor but he has a beautifully sweet tenorino voice that reminds me of Luigi Alva in the 1950's. I will not only buy this cd, but I will also try to attend the next local concert by this ... Read More

It almost hurts to say anything negative about this magnificent tenor..this man who has succeeded in ANY repertoire..arguably the greatest tenor of his generation..But: Why Placido did you record this material now? As another reviewer aptly put it - some 20 years too late? These songs requre a fresh, young Italianate voice. At this point in his life, the great Placido Domingo does not meet any of these requirements. I can only conclude that Domingo was persuaded to record this material only to "complete" a career repertoire that includes Handel and Wagner, and everything in between! My advice: before you start to dislike these glorious love songs from this recording, find them done - the way they are supposed to be done - by the inimitable Giuseppe Distefano.
