Haydn's "The Seasons" is wonderful music. Composed towards the end of Haydn's long and illustrious musical life, Haydn didn't hesitate to utilize thematic material from other works of his (including from his surprise symphony).

Haydn's choral music is lively and cheerful for the most part. One of the interesting aspects of Haydn is his ability to take the styles of the past and mold them into his own. The Seasons has alot of interesting polyphonic music interspersed with the homophony that one usually think of with Haydn.

As for this performance, I think Neville Marriner and the Academy of St. Martin in the Fields does good job. Unlike another reviewer, I tend to like Haydn better with modern instruments. The chorus does a good job and there are some real ... Read More

I love this set, along with the cycle recorded by the Hungarian Quartet for EMI around the same time -- the early 50s. -- the Budapest Quartet from their Library Of Congress recordings, and the Hollywood Quartet recordings of the late quartets. Need I mention the Busch Quartet? Yes.

My favorite remains the 1970s recordings by this same Vegh Quartet, but to me the energy and leaner recorded sound of this set offers a bracing experience, while not slighting the singing lines of the slow movements.

If you enjoy the Busch and Budapest recordings, I believe you will enjoy this early Vegh cycle as well.

I used to have this CD when I was maybe 8 years old. Now I'm 21, and I'm thinking of buying it again, because I have such fond memories of it. As I remember, it's perfect for younger kids (i.e. me) as an introduction to Beethoven's music, and as long as it's not too loud, it's very easy to fall asleep to.

9.Bolshoi-Gala from: Melodiya

This recording illustrates the new period of the Bolshoi. The singers chosen represent the new and old stars of the Bolshoi opera. The veterans include Artur Eisen, and the modern stars include Vladimir Matorin (Rightly considered the best Ivan Susanin of the ninties), Tatyana Yerastova, Vitaliy Tarashenko, Larisa Rudakova (who sang the Majic Flute at the met), Pavel Chernykh, Vladimir Redkin and Maria Gavrilova. Feranec, who is now replaced by Mark Ermler as the cheif conductor of Bolshoi orchestra, seems to follow the orchestra trained by Ermler, Lazarev and Svetlanov, instead of leading it. The chorus is spectacular.

I am very happy with the CD. I enjoy Anna's voice and singing. I wish to go to the Metropolitan Opera to see her.
