If you like Diamond's early songs done with the same punch and edge he had then this is the CD for you. You can hear his maturation over time, but these are his no frills songs that started his career. I wish there were fewer obscure songs on the CD, but they too are a revelation of his development. Very worth it for Neil Diamond fans. Karen Weaver

If you like Diamond's early songs done with the same punch and edge he had then this is the CD for you. You can hear his maturation over time, but these are his no frills songs that started his career. I wish there were fewer obscure songs on the CD, but they too are a revelation of his development. My mom went nuts when she saw this!! She's a huge Neil Diamond fan and says it is a wonderful set!

I love each of Neil's six Uni studio albums tremendously and this set could have been great but alas it was not meant to be. The sound quality is harsh and super compressed. There is no space at all to let the music breathe. These albums were very dynamic and warm to begin with and much of that is lost on the Play Me set. Sequencing - the ideal sequencing would have been to place two complete albums on each disc, with the leftover space to be used for the single mixes that have not yet been released on CD (the mono mix of Brother Love's for example). Instead, they filled up each disc to the max, forcing one to change discs in the middle of an album side which totally breaks up the flow. I know one can burn these to CD-R to get whatever sequencing they like, but there ... Read More

I am a child of the 80's New Wave era. However, having much older brothers who listened to everything from Elvis to Bob Seger, The Eagles and, yes, Neil Diamond, I was also very eclectic. Diamond is one of those rare musical gifts. His music is very influential to other artists who might not replicate his style. Most of his success is not melodic, but rather, poetic. This CD is amazing. It's absolutely my favorite Neil Diamond CD, bar none. I grew up listening to this, thanks to my father, who was a big fan. I fee lucky that he was, otherwise I may never have discovered what a talent Neil really is. THIS CD IS ABSOLUTELY BEAUTIFUL!!! Captain Sunshine... Canta Libre... Morningside... it just goes on and on. PLEASE PLEASE won't the record label remaster this CD properly. The last master was done when CDs were a relatively new novelty, and the best we could hope for is a release with no surface noise, but COME ON! Give this CD a proper remaster and release it already!

Have had this in LP for many years. So glad to purchase it in a cd. Excellent!!! as all of his music. Songs from this album however were among the ones that have made me a Neil Diamond fan for over 40 years. His music is timeless, unique, and wonderful. A dream of mine is soon to come true...Nov. 2, 2008 my daughter is taking me to St Louis for his concert. Proves you never get too old to enjoy beauty.
