The single disc version of this CD is probably a perfect retro pop CD. The two disc version is icing on the cake. Probably the most inspirational core set of material from any modern band coming out of the post punk, new wave / MTV era in the eighties. The newer material is different but just as good. If you have nothing, this is probably the best place to start.

I noticed all the complaints on sound. So my 5-star rating is really for an import, "The Best of R.E.M." With 16 songs the songlist is representative of R.E.M.'s early years, though there are no rarities on it. It starts with "Chronic Town," then proceeds with 3 songs from each album chronologically from "Murmur" through "Document." The sound quality is fine, although a little lower than most newer CDs, so you have to turn it up a little. Here's the excellent song selection:

Carnival of Sorts
Radio Free Europe
Perfect Circle
Talk About the Passion
So. Central Rain
(Don't Go Back To) Rockville
Pretty Persuasion
Green Grow the Rushes
Can't Get There From Here
Driver 8
Fall on Me
I Believe
Cuyahoga

By 1985, I had already lived a few years absorbing this being called: R.E.M. The only reason that I was ahead of the pack was due to my move to Virginia two years prior. The Music scene in the South was very fertile {New Bands had a chance of Radio play} and the Club/Bar circuit was rich with Veterans such as Gregg Allman and Robin Trower, but was also generous to new Bands such as: The Georgia Satelites and Red Ryder, that were playing throughout the Southlands. The early 1980's DID show promise, away from the constant deluge of: "Thriller."

R.E.M. had been through my town already, and my Concert memories of the show in Virginia Beach with The Dream Syndicate as the opener in the hot summer of 1984, had already passed into the stuff of Legends. This was my Band, and the Kings of Music, below ... Read More

Waht I really want is to give 5 stars for the music, and 2.5 stars for the sound quality of the CD.

It was great to listen to some of the REM songs from for their IRS label times, like "Fall on me" and "perfect circle"...I've been wanting to listen to some early REM for a long time, and this CD has a great collection put together just for that...
HOWEVER, whoever mixed this CD must've been on crack. it's FLAT! one of the worst sounding CD's I've ever heard. There are no up/dwon tonal passages, everything is at the SAME volume level, and almost NO BASS! When I 1st listened to it, I thought my stereo or speakers had a problem. Listening to the music via Winamp per PC with EQ adjusted, it's more tolerable, but the lack of low freq passages is still ridiculous. I'm sure the original album versions ... Read More

it's safe to say that i got a little bit obsessed with many of these songs when this album was first released. songs like "Supersonic" and "A Song About A Girl Who Went Shopping" have a weird noisy edge that seems to gather some influence from some of Sonic Youth's sound. of course, MTX is a pop punk band, but they seem to have a few interesting surprises up their sleeve. there's a ton of extra tracks added here (which sort of overwhelms and undermines the original album's impact) but more boom for your buck...so i can't complain too much.

R.E.M.'s music is among the most influential of all-time. Their hits like 'Orange Crush' and 'Losing My Religion' still get played on FM radio stations everyday.

But, unfortunately, their early years are overlooked for their more famous Warner Bros. recordings. And that's a real shame, because R.E.M.'s best music came from their years on the IRS label, which is now owned by Capitol.

This set, 'Eponymous' is the set to own if you are just starting your R.E.M. collection. It's got all of the major early IRS recordings from 1983-1988. I can't get enough of songs like 'Radio Free Europe,' 'The One I Love' and 'It's The End Of The World As We Know It,' all of which appear on this set.

And, Capitol gets tons of credit for remastering all of these classics. In translation, the sound ... Read More
