Joel Harrison explains in the liner notes how he was asked to play a song at a George Harrison tribute, and he wound up digging so much into George's songs that he made this CD. It starts off with a straight-up jazz version of "Here Comes The Sun". With the supporting cast of David Liebman, David Binney, and Uri Caine, you know the instrumental songs are going to be good. "Within In You Without You" is my least favorite Sgt. Peppers song because it doesn't fit. Here, it becomes a great jazz song. It's not like a Shakti song or anything, but it retains its Indian flavor and has good soprano and alto saxophone. "While My Guitar Gently Weeps" thats the song in a somewhat different direction, it's less melodramatic. "The Art Of Dying" is the first vocal song. Joel Harrison's voice isn't ... Read More

This 1971 album was the first of the all-star benefit albums. And arguably the best. In a nut shell, George Harrison, fresh off his success with "All Things Must Pass" raised his profile even further when he joined with Indian sitar master Ravi Shankar for 2 benefit shows at Madison Square Garden. At the time, Bangladesh was ½ a world away and largely unknown and forgotten by Americans and the rest of the world for that matter. Plus it had been born out of a war between religions and torn apart even further by devastating floods. George's idea was simple; gather as many musician friends as he could for a concert and maybe raise some money to aid the citizens of the emerging nation of Bangladesh. But even with his high profile, George was uncertain the shows would even be sellouts, billing it ... Read More

On Spock's Beard second album the band were on a roll and really starting to get attention in the progressive rock world. The title track is a progressive rock re-working of the George Harrison classic. You would not think that this would work, but amazingly it does. "Thoughts", "The Doorway", and "Waste Away" are all shorter tunes (well, the Doorway is 11 minutes), and have all become Spocks Beard classics. The 16 minute "Time Has Come" the album's anchor and serves as another great epic from Mr. Morse and company. I don't like this one quite as much as "The Light", but it is another great Spock's Beard disc that is a must own if you are a fan of the band.

"Leon Russell is an American genius, a long-haired swamp-man, a man of passion who infuses his lyrics with an untouchable poignancy. He is the king of melody and of instrumental perfection." how true, and how I wish I had said it-but it was said by interviewer, Jack Nichols.

Leon Russell was born in the early 40's in Oklahoma. He gravitated to music as a young man, and started his climb up the ladder with many musicians who are famous today. He married in his late thirties to Mary McCready who happened to be black. He would introduce her to his sometimes shocked audience, which would entertain Leon, no end.

Leon made his mark in music with the song "TightRope". He went on to pen "Delta Blue", and then "Masquerade" which won a Grammy for George Benson. "Mad Dogs and Englishmen" was made ... Read More

i'm gonna make this review pretty clear - if you're a Balzac fan, you need to get this album. I know that not much Balzac stuff has come out in the US, so the only way one can get a hold of their albums is to get them imported [thus leading to a high cost], but believe me, the material is quite varied and original. The opening "Grave" is a short little instrumental piece, and the song that follows it unleashes the true fury that is Balzac. The rest of the album is quite good as well, as the songs range from that "whooooaaaa - oh - ohhh" fans have come to know, to more industrial, heavy notes. Overall, a great album, and fans won't be dissapointed. Only negative comments I can make is that some of the songs contain too much screaming, which I don't think is singer Hirosuke's shining point. Still, there's no shortage ... Read More
