I've owned this CD for several years now, and recently listened to it again during a drive from Delaware to Florida. I simply love it, and I'm willing to bet that you will too.

After years of shopping on Amazon, this is the first review I've ever written ... and I got here from a Google search --- I was looking to see if there were any performances of this show coming up that I could see.

Ed Wood is based on the life and work of Edward D. Wood Jr, who has been perhaps both saddled and blessed with the title of Worst Director of All Time. Filmed entirely in black and white it both mirrors Wood's own work and draws humor from it. The result is one of my favorite films of all time.
The first time I watched it I spent most of the movie laughing at everything from the bad props, to the poor scripts, to Depp's even-more-optomistic-then-Spongebob portrayal of Wood, but with subsequent viewings I have come to see the sadder side of the story; Wood's failure to find success and stardom, Legosi's fall from grace and struggles with drug addiction, and the rag tag band of partners that would all share their exploits. It tells the tale of all those left in Hollywood's dustbin.

What a voice! This is easily the best cd I've heard in a long, long time. His moving rendition of "Bridge Over Troubled Water" is absolutely mesmerizing. Even though these songs were first popular in my younger days I am hearing several for the very first time. "The Love She Found In Me" was originally recorded by Gary Morris but I had to find the album to remember hearing it in years past. Marnell's rendition was excellent!

Conway Twitty never performed "I May Never Get to Heaven" as well and I've seen and heard him often.

Neither Elvis or Frank Sinatra sang a better version of "My Way" which has been covered many times by other artists using it as "filler" in proved to be an otherwise, unremarkable album.

When I first heard "One In a Million You," I thought the track had ... Read More

Do I mean Johnny Depp? Tim Burton. No! I mean ED!

If you enjoyed the film as much as I did, you'll love this soundtrack. It starts with with Jeffery Jones monologue, as Ed's magician friend Criswell. The music reminds you repeatedly of the fine film--one of the funniest on record.

Then there's the other monologue. Who can forget, "Pull the string! Pull the string!"

If you have no use for Ed Wood, the film or the guy, this may not appeal to you. But, again, if you love the film like I do, don't miss out on this CD!

I agree with the previous, but I'll say a little more about it. You'd not know that these recordings are from the '50s from merely listening. And, holy smokes, what performances! The Minneapolis Symphony was a crack outfit (as it is today as the Minnesota Orchestra) with plenty of verve and unique sound in every section. There is no need to look at a CD to determine conductor and orchestra...and all this personality is fully in service of the music!

The Philharmonia Hungarica of Vienna that Dorati used to such good effect in his later complete Kodaly set for London (not to mention all that HAYDN) gives a good account in fine sound, but I kind of lean toward the later presentations (which you'll want to find and have, of course).

Nevertheless, this fine Mercury disk is an extraordinary value and a ... Read More

The classical music world has come to rely upon Ivan Fischer as a one-amn spokesman for Hungarian music as performed by the best of Hungarian musicians. His approach to the whole canon from Liszt to Bartok has brought a native flavor that international conductors can't match. That's certainly ture in this exceptional Kodaly disc, where even the two familiar works, an extended Hary Janos Suite and the Galanta Dances, sound brighter, wittier, and more vivacious than eer before.

Like Copland in this country, whose idiom was sophisticated and yet folk-based, Kodaly's music speaks directly to several flavors of Hungarian culture, and Fischer is able to capture them all. The unfamiliar works here make the program even more savory, with a smattering of folk songs for children's chorus and a longish (11 min.) transcirption ... Read More
