This is not your grandma's Figaro. At first I was surprised, then taken aback, then intrigued and then completely mesmerized. It's Figaro meets Psycho. The pacing is slower, more deliberate and the whole tone and atmosphere darker and more intense. And in the end, I think it works.

The whole theme of this production is the maddening, almost destructive power of Eros (here portrayed by an extraneous character- a seductive non -speaking/singing young man dressed in school boy uniform with cherubic wings running around trying to manipulate all the characters) locked in a battle with "Love." In the end "Love" triumphs. (except for poor Cherubino who throughout the opera is portrayed as a poor young thing totally defenseless against the power of Eros--in the end he's reduced ... New releases by Angela Gheorghiu always arouse comment. This Puccini arias/scenes disc has beautiful singing from Gheorghiu, however, I find a sameness in her singing, whether she be singing an aria from Butterfly or Turandot. She colours her voice well and finds the right sense of melancholy for many of these tender heroines. I am upset that a better conductor was not sourced to compliment Gheorghiu on this recital disc. Coppola's tempi plod through each one of these masterpieces and I feel that with more freedom, the singing would have reached a higher plane

In my book Opera Rara can do very little wrong. All their recording are wonderful in every respect - singing, quality of the recording, packaging & booklet notes, etc. This recording is no exception. Though a highlights rather than a complete recording, this is the best Meyerbeer opera they've done, which is odd considering that of all Meyerbeer's Italian operas, this was his only failure. My only question is why they recorded this in highlights only & the others (such as Margherita d'Anjou which could use some cuts) in complete recordings. If you're looking to try an Opera Rara Meyerbeer recording, or want to sample one of his early Italian operas, this is the one to buy. Great melodies & exciting music, it's little wonder Rossini left Italy & went to Paris once Meyerbeer arrived on the scene.

This expensive box set is a collection of scenes from full-length recordings starring tenor Placido Domingo under the EMI record label, a label that championed him. This is unquestionably Domingo's most extensive compilation album. He is in fine voice as he sang under EMI throughout the years, but mostly in the 80's and 90's. Here we find him singing his most celebrated roles- Verdi's Otello, still his signature Italian role, Alfredo from Traviata, Mario Cavaradossi from Tosca, Lieutenant Pinkerton from Madame Butterfly, Dick Johnson from La Fanciualla Del West, Rodolfo from La Boheme, Don Carlos- the role that earned him a place in the EMI catalog. The Giulini Don Carlos is still a hot item and here we hear excerpts from that legendary recording. If you are the biggest fan of Placido Domingo, and you have the ... Read More

For years I listened to the theme music on Inspector Morse and wondered what it was. Now that Amazon makes it easy to track such things down, I know. These three albums (volumes 1, 2, and 3) combine Barrington Pheloung's wonderful theme and background music with Morse's favorites (be warned, we get into some opera here). The three volumes provide an excellent evening of classical music.

Maria Callas is an important singer in opera at mid-20th century. She helped fuel a renewed interest in bel canto, through her efforts in the works of Donizetti and Bellini--even thought she really had little of the classic coloratura soprano skills. But her personality, ability to create characters, and sheer will power made these operas work. Callas was not a great vocal technician; her singing, especially later on, had some ugly sounds. But her distinct voice was important in operatic history. Want a beautiful voice? Go for Mirella Freni or Anna Moffo. Want grit, character, and magic? Callas does nicely there. And until the latter part of her career, her voice was quite good.

Some illustrative cuts. The "Seguidilla" from "Carmen." She did not ever perform this on stage, according to the notes. ... Read More
