This album is incredibly unique, almost like a genre of its own. I'm unsuccessfully looking for other pieces of music that gives the same mood for years. Even if you don't like it, you should hear it once in your life.

I never really got "into" Portishead in the late 90s. Sure I had their albums and loved the moodiness but never became immersed into them. I was a dabbler.

Picked this up on a whim. Wow. They can do what they do on the albums live. That, to me, is the ultimate proof of a band's talent. Not only do the songs sound fantastic, there is something about seeing them performed live that enhances them.

Seeing Adrian Utley playing the theremin, Geoff Barrows do his scratching on the turntables, Beth Gibbons clutching cigarette in hand while wailing into the microphone while a small orchestra performs alongside them is a kind of a surreal cool. No posing here, just that Portishead mystique.

I get it now and am going to go swimming in Portishead.

This album is a miracle of fortitude. Sound upon sound hits you left and right and, just when you're starting to feel a consistent groove, out comes another sound to keel you over. Repetition is not the name of the game here. DJ Shadow grabs hundreds of sounds from the attic and comes up with one of the freshest and most timeless hip-hop/trip-hop/what-have-you albums of all time. It's become THE measuring stick for any producer/mixer worth their salt. This album's been blowing minds going on twelve years now.

Take note, Puff Daddy. Timbaland. Kanye West. And bow down. There aren't a lot of albums on Amazon with 100+ reviews that maintain a five star average, but this is deservedly one of them. Check it out for yourself and see why.

It's been said before, but if what you're looking for is Virtual Insanity, buy the single. With the exception of, to an extend, Cosmic Girl and Alright, it's really the only track on the album that has that feel or sound.

There's a lot of ground covered on the album, and some of it is more successful than others. Virtual Insanity and Cosmic Girl are instantly likable, cheery numbers. Use the Force is a bit on the silly side for me, but things pick up for the next few tracks. Drifting Along pretty much runs right off the rail for me, and Didjerama is just plain boring (though Digjital Vibrations is alright).

Things start to pick up again after that. Travelling Without Moving and You Are My Love move back in to the up-beat territory.

The final two tracks are ... Read More

A friend played this CD for me on my last visit to Paris and I now associate Paris with Bebel's Tanto Tempo CD...even though she's Brazilian and the music is not Parisian. It just fit the time and place. You don't have to understand a word of what she's singing to understand what she's saying. I know nothing about Bossa Nova or Brazilian music but I got what she was portraying in these soulful and emotive songs. Just incredible and can put you in such a great positive mood! A must have for your collection if you are open to varied music tastes.

I listened to the entire album over on Lala. While there were no bad tracks, I didn't find anything (except Mer du Japon) that excited me as much as Premiers Symptomes. Granted, Air has moved on to a different style. Apparently it is a style that I don't like as much. For one, if they're going to have lyrics, they need to find a better lyricist. Second, the synthesized vocals sound like an emasculated (i.e. castrated) man. I have nothing against castrati personally, but the sound does not appeal to me in pop music. Finally, the compositions themselves, while many are pleasant dreamy tracks that may inspire daydreams and induce calm, did not hold my attention. Perhaps there is some musical subtlety that I'm missing, but I don't think so.

It all depends on what you're looking for. I think I will buy Talkie ... Read More

"Human Behaviour" was the first time I'd ever heard this woman's voice. Thank God for that happenstance. This LP folds you within it and you become one with the fibers contained.

First I saw the WEAPON OF CHOICE video with Christopher Walken. I'd never really heard FATBOY SLIM and that was my introduction. The cd has a few greats and a few misses. I wish KALIFORNIA had been on it.

All in all, it was worth the money.
