The songs on the In a Beautiful Place Out in the Country EP were taken from the Geogaddi sessions, which yielded the dark, schizophrenic final product of said album. However, the songs on the Beautiful Place EP are slightly more listenable than the songs on Geogaddi, although they do have their fair share of unsettling details. The title track features a sample from a religious recruitment recording, and the second track's name is a play off of Branch Davidian leader Amos Poe Rodan (thanks for that info, Shawn). But these subtle hints of perversity do not hinder the aural beauty of this EP. All four songs are crafted simply wonderfully. As the first track, Kid For Today, suggests, listening to the disk is like taking a time machine in two different directions. All of the songs sound innocent ... Read More

Although they have been dismissed by some, the music of sisters Biance and Sierra Casady stands as a surprising revelation in the seemingly lonely musical landscape of the last decade.

Whilst CocoRosie have been generally classified as "freak folk" in the vein of Sufjan Stevens, in reality they are as much an electronic band in the vein of Pram or Laika. Indeed, the range of sounds used on "La Maison de Mon Rêve" is really amazing, from the acoustic guitars of the opening few tracks to the fiery, noisy, yet remarkably beautiful electronics of "Tahiti Rain Song" and even rap-like voice that sound OK on "Haitian Love Song." On some songs like "Butterscotch" they use sounds of everyday appliances like a blackboard rubber (reminiscent of the opening to "Future Days").

I first heard Cibo Matto while playing the Xbox game JSRF- Jet Set Radio Future. Their song "Birthday Cake" really grew on me.

After seeking out more of their music, I found this gem. Although I liked Viva! La Woman, I prefer this cd. There are very few weak spots here, the kind of cd you can listen to from start to finish. Don't just buy an "essential" Cibo Matto disc, as you'll miss out on some of the best songs on here.

Listen to sound samples before buying! Compared to 'Tales of the Forgotten Melodies' this CD was a big let down. Gone are the collages of movie audio samples placed over dark soundscapes (although a few short 'filler' tracks reflect this style). 'Hope & Sorrow' focuses more on guest vocalist and rappers and most of the tracks fail to impress. This seems to be an attempt at more of a commercial 'dance' release than the well crafted Turntablism record that I was expecting. I 'hoped' this disc would be an excellent follow up to 'Tales of the Forgotten Melodies' but all I felt was 'sorrow' upon my first listen. A disappointment.

This is a good downtempo album that gently fuses hip-hop with acid jazz. If you are a fan to the series, I'd have to say Mushroom Jazz, Vol. 5 is one of the better ones.

21 tracks that are nicely mixed, but I was a little disappointed how the set loses its steam (even for a downtempo set) in the second half. There is major lull from tracks 14 to 17 due to track layout causing monotony.

Highlight track on the album for me is "Chali 2na Comin' Thru" by DJ Numark.

The sticker on Lesiem's 2003 album, "Illumination," says "For Fans Of Enigma And Pink Floyd." I thought, "Well, that definitely describes me," so I bought the disc. Having now played it twice, my impression of this German studio group's 2nd album is this: "Illumination" is nice, pleasant ambient music, with excellent sound quality and production values. My problem with Lesiem is that they sound a little *too* much like an Enigma wanna-be group (though I don't know why Pink Floyd's name was put on the promotional sticker, as Lesiem sound nothing like Floyd). Think of the landmark first Enigma album, "MCMXC A.D.," with the chanting monks, lush keyboards & rhythms, the sultry female voices, etc., and then listen to this album. You got the chanting male choirs (though they're not monks, I'll give 'em that), the Enigma ... Read More

This is a melancolic and dark album, I really like it, but is not easy listening, I think is great for days when you feel blue. I really like it, because is soft music, and I like that.

I was first introduced to Craig Armstrong, unknowingly. One of my favorite soundtracks of all time is Mouling Rouge in which Armstrong contributes to some of my favorite pieces on the soundtrack. But, it wasn't until the Love Actually soundtrack that I realized who he was. His piano pieces on this album are what made some of the scenes as powerfully emotional and stirring as they were.
This CD is one of my favorites. His melodies are haunting. You can at once feel the emotion in every piece. For a hopeless romantic as myself, these pieces emote everything that I feel at all times throughout the day. Everyone should purchase this CD and experience Craig Armstrong.
