I bought this CD to support the campaign & for the memorabilia. Finally popped it in the player this week on the way to work. BIG MISTAKE! Hard to drive when you're crying! Not only moved by snippets of Obama inspiring in that way he does...but also by the most memorable words of Martin Luther King. I knew the CD would be a good campaign memory, but was really impressed and excited by the inspiration and great choices of the music. Except for the last track, I totally enjoy each cut and that Barack is woven throughout. I now have bought five more for presents...and may just have to pick up a few more now that I figured out I could save $5 here at Amazon vs. the campaign site. If you have any sense of history, you'll want to own this one, and will be surprised by how much you play ... Read More

I had never heard of Dar Williams before hearing an interview with her on NPR. Intrigued by the pieces of songs played as part of that interview, I bought Promised Land. It contains a wonderfully varied set of songs, all with interesting settings and well sung. Williams has a wonderful voice that she uses well to enhance both the sound her music and the meaning behind the lyrics -- although sometimes that makes it hard to hear the exact words. I quickly found myself singing parts of them to myself during the day, Some, like "The Business of Things" can really stay with you. This is a rare combination of quality and quantity. There are a lot of good songs, mostly because GL wrote and performed so well. Obviousy it is still a small fraction of the songs that he wrote in total, but I like the ones they included. Just from listening, the recordings all seem to be in a studio, so the quality is good.

Got this cd based on the song Hallelujah and everyone giving it such great reviews. Let me just say I am completely disappointed. I listened to it twice to give it the benefit of the doubt and found there are are only 2 or 3 songs I would ever wanna hear on this album ever again.

Bringing It All Back Home being Dylan's 1965 release and his 5th studio album is without a doubt a grand album. The album is divided into one accoustic and one electric side. Here we have classic tracks such as Mr. Tambourine Man, It's alright ma (I'm only bleeding). The book-let is very nice with a photograph on the cover of Dylan together with some woman. I do not know who it is to be honest. Inside we get poetry penned by Dylan that I find to be very interesting. We also get a plethora of pictures of Dylan recording the album. The back cover photo is a photo of Dylan playing guitar in the studio. 5/5.

I am amazed by people who attempt to stereotype creative genius. Because this album takes on a distinctly different (more ominous, brooding, cutting) mood from the first two albums, they regard it sub-standard! Even in the classic 'Rolling Stone Record Guide' of 1983, the 'critic' failed to appreciate this album, giving it a meagre three stars because he felt its lyrics over-critical and dated. Yet I listen to this album in 2008, 25 years later, and am still moved, and deeply so, by the universality of the subject matter - to say nothing of the music itself. It is, after all, by induction that we generalise from the particular - something that Dylan the bard is brilliant at achieving in his tales. I am not implying with this review that this CD sounds like a hangover-it doesn't. This is actually one of only two John Mellencamp albums I purchased (the other is the wonderful The Lonesome Jubilee) and the other reviews here already explain how different this is from an album like that so I won't go into it again-why preach to the converted?Anyway yes this isn't exactly the happy singalong kind of rock tunes of Mellencamp's fast. At the same time there's no indication he intended anything like that to start with. One thing I must say is John Mellencamp had the good sense to include a lyric booklet with this (believe it or not some CD's still don't include them) because the lyrics are the best part of this music. Ever since I saw them open up for Martina McBride in Pittsburgh in '06, I've been a big fan of LBT. I admit I was sceptical when the new cd came out (they had a tough act to follow), but after a few listens, I can't get it out of my cd player. I've never heard a group where it doesn't matter who lead sings, the song sounds great. And their harmonizing is so great, that each song is amazing. I highly recommend this cd to anyone who likes their previous work.
