I admit that old country music was pretty cornball, but it was good cornball. Lefty Frizzell was one of its best practitioners, and this CD has some great examples of his work.

For Christmas I couldn't think of anything to get my step-dad, one day I got in his truck and he was listening to an old album of Hank Wms Sr so I started researching and decided that an old Merle Haggard CD might be the ticket. Merles early stuff is close to some of the Hank SR music. It worked our great. HE loved it.

Years ago our daughter gave us this CD for our anniversary with her comment that the song "Look At Us" reminds her of us. What an inspiration that song has become for us! And somehow in several moves we lost our copy -- so this is a precious replacement and we're delighted to have found it.

This is the best compilation that I have found. It has all of her best songs and they sound great! I am so glad to finally have this cd. She truly was the best! Anyone who likes Tammy will certainly enjoy having this selection in their collection.

Like any box set of a great artist, the material is excellent, and "The Original Outlaw" includes most of Merle's greatest songs. However, this set, the only one that spans Merle's entire career, could have been much better. First, there isn't enough Haggard. There are only 3 discs, and, where the fourth would be, only a nice picture of Merle. It wuld have been nice to include a fourth disc with another twenty songs, or to have included more songs on each of the three discs. Discs 1 and 2 each clock in at under an hour, and Disc 3 is about 70 minutes long. Thus, they could have incuded another 45-50 minutes of music. I think others are more capable than me of giving the real estimate of this man's body of work. But I shall add my two cents. This album is astonishingly strong. (Sadly, even many "Best Of" albums are not strong.) And I, like others, attribute this to his consistent refusal to sell out. True, he had his moments of temptation and did a weak cross-over or two. But finally, he parted ways with record companies rather than leave his roots. The record companies tried hard to, at various points, "manage" Stonewall's sound, but he resisted repeatedly.
