As the final installment of the Moody Blues' classic seven LPs, 1972's "Seventh Sojourn" reflects a very mature band. Comfortable with where they've been and how they make music, they ease back here on experimentation in favor of simpler melodies.

Make no mistake, though. This is a masterpiece, beginning to end. From Mike Pinder's social thought-provoking "Lost in a Lost World" to Justin Hayward's uplifting "New Horizons" to Ray Thomas' sea shanty "For My Lady" to John Lodge's tearful "Isn't Life Strange?" to Pinder's wartime conscientious objector tale in "When You're a Free Man" to Lodge's rockin' "I'm Just a Singer."

I get the feeling they all decided to just be themselves this time, to say what was on their minds and in their hearts in one of those "I've always ... Read More

This is a good video record of one of Yes's concerts at their peak of popularity and arguably, their peak of musical greatness. The video and sound quality of the video is good for 1972. Steve Howe is showcased particularly well by this video. My main frustration, and main criticism is the conspicuous lack of justice done to Rick Wakeman; the video didn't even focus on him while he was playing his keyboard solo for Close to the Edge, one of the most memorable solos in progressive rock. Considering how few good videos available of Yes in the 1970's, it's a must-have for major Yes fans.

I'm a Doors fan and I have bought all these albums at least 4 times before (LP, cassette, "regular" CD, then CD edition with bonus tracks) each, so the only reason why I bought this box set is the 5.1 surround sound mix. By any metric imaginable, these are definitely the worst 5.1 mixes I have ever encountered. Just about everything is dumped on the central channel; one can occasionally hear a guitar solo or keyboards on the surround channels, and that's about it. You might as well disconnect the subwoofer because no signal is sent to that channel. Save your money and wait for the next dvd-audio edition.

After the "Drama" album and tour the Yes camp pretty much split up and it looked like the band was done. Trevor Horn went on to be one of the most successful producers in rock, and would produce, but not participate in the "90125" album. Geoff Downs and Steve Howe went on to have great success with Asia. This basically left Chris Squire and Alan White as the odd men out. Enter a very talented young guitarist / vocalist from South Africa by the name of Trevor Rabin. Rabin had done several solo albums and had also had moderate success with the band Rabbit. Squire, White, and Rabin began working together eventually bringing in original Yes keyboard player Tony Kaye calling themselves Cinema. Cinema came close to putting an album together, but before that happened former Yes vocalist Jon Anderson ... Read More

The Grateful Dead-Workingman's Dead ****

Not quite the classic it is made out to be, American Beauty is still the Deads crowning achievement, but Workingmans Dead is still a pretty killer album. Released in 1970, the album was a departure from the crazy psychedelic blues that they had previously released on albums such as Aoxomoxoa. This was more acoustic and had more of an emphasis on the song rather than the jam. Lyrically it is also one of the the bands strongest efforts.

As a guitar player Workingman's Dead offers some of Jerry Garcia's all time best work. A large variety of jazz, acoustic, rock, jam, blues, at times heavy metal are covered in his range on this legendary album. He really shines here more than any other studio album in my opinion.

First off, Supernatural is not *just* a Santana record. It's more of a mix between Santana, his band, his collaborators and sometimes the producers. It's really a great sounding record all around, and despite it's mainstream trappings, I found pretty much all the songs good (not awesome or great, mind you). I'll tackle the album in it's two different faces: The more traditional (though this one is far from the traditional Latin music it seems) songs (give or take), or the less traditional, latin-pop songs.

Santana and his band of percussion instruments, horns, keyboards, the works are probably the best, and Carlos Santana makes his guitar sing and never wastes a note. The very first note on (Da Le) Yaleo hits you like a refreshing drink of water, enough to make you say ahhhhh. The band is tight ... Read More

Not being completely familiar with Sly and the Family Stone's discography, I can really say almost nothing as to the validity of this disk as a collection. But what I will say is that upon first listen, this blew me away. It is almost unbelievable how many of these songs have quietly, and others not so quietly, become a part of our culture, and all of these songs are fantastic and memorable. Sometimes the problem is that the songs end too fast, just when the listener starts to beg for more, but that makes this even more fun and irresistible to explore. What Sly did upon the making of this music is remarkable. The songs are catchy, fun, and energetic as well as skillfully played, but at the same time they really mean something and teach valuable lessons without sounding like they are preaching morals. "...Happy New Year, first of all. I hope we have a million or two million more of them."

Recorded live at the Fillmore East on December 31, 1969, Band Of Gypsys (1970) was the last album that Jimi Hendrix personally authorized to be released before he died on September 18, 1970. The Band Of Gypsys was a new group put together by Jimi after he dissolved The Jimi Hendrix Experience. It consisted of Hendrix, Electric Flag drummer/vocalist Buddy Miles and bassist Billy Cox (Jimi's old Army buddy).

"...I'd like to dedicate this one to, uh, to the draggin' scene that's going on. All the soldiers that are fighting in Chicago and Milwaukee and New York. Oh, yes...and all the soldiers that are fighting in Vietnam. I'd like to do a thing called Machine Gun."

Yes, I have to say that his Hendrix performance is quire possibly the finest live performance I have ever purchased. Most certainly, watching Jimi do his thing for the first time in America, "Pulling all the stops," as Jimi put it, is a treat for the heart and soul of true rockers. This DVD is necessary for those who love Hendrix, but most importantly, Hendrix's Monterey performance is for those who need a lesson on Rock's finest hour. Buy it for yourself. Buy it for a friend. Buy it for a youngster who needs some rock and roll education. Two thumbs way up!
