I had the original vinyl EP (wonder where it is now?) and I bought the CD a year or two back mainly for nostalgia. All the Beatles stuff from around this time has a strange feel. It's a combination of that very English sound and a kind of world-weary feel that suddenly they had aged 100 years in the space of a few months. The songs have a dreamy spaced out feel but at the same time can be very aware and simultaneously almost childish. Listening to this again, it's hard to believe that they had been writing songs like Please Please Me only a couple of years back. Life would never be the same again. . . . Oh yeah, and it's a good album, even if it's cobbled together from the EP plus a few singles!

For those just starting out as Beatles fans.....Welcome. Not sure how to start ? Look no further. Instead of buying different albums or discs trying to figure them out start here. This is the start and pretty much the best of their early work and hits. It will bring alive The Beatles and yea your going to get hooked. You'll play these songs over and over again. They say you can't ware out a CD. You can and you will with this. The only down fall is that you WILL DEMAND MORE. Dont let the heavy price get you. You will find that this is more then worth it's price and a better start then "1" or Past Masters. Without a doubt this is the best way for a new fan to start. My mom gave a used copy of it to me as a Christmas present a while ago, and later I got the albums that all of the tracks from this album are on. This title definitely lives up to it's name in one sense. It primarily has his most popular recordings and with this album, you really do experience Hendrix. The real thing that I should mention is that this is the perfect Jimi Hendrix album to start out with. This album begins with what is probably Hendrix's most well known song "Purple Haze," the song that got his start "Hey Joe," his one-hit-wonder by technicality/tribute to Bob Dylan "All Along the Watchtower," "Voodoo Child (Slight Return)," his classic performance of "The Star-Spangled Banner," and it even includes some of his posthumously released tracks put onto First Rays of the New Rising ... There are a few nay-sayers among the reviews of this album, and to them I say: This album is billed as the 30th Anniversary Edition. That's "edition", not re-release. The word strongly implies "somehow different" and this album is definitely different. The only reason to buy it, in my opinion, is to upgrade your historical collection of "Dark Side" to the newest and dramatically improved technology, and perhaps to hear a different opinion on how the mixdown should be done. Audiophile purists continue to sneer at "CD" technology, and for a few good reasons. The sampling frequency is such that subtle overtones in the uppermost registers which contribute to spatial imaging are lost or trashed. SACD essentially solves that problem. This is the album that Dr. Gonzo's Samoan lawyer himself wished to be ecstatically bathtub-electrocuted by. If that is not a good endorsement, I don't know what is.

Roger McGuinn, Chris Hillman, David Crosby, Michael Clarke, and Gene Clarke. The Byrds. One of the top groups in their time. This represents some of their greatest hits (and there are some bonus cuts not on the original work). Some examples of their art: "Mr. Tambourine Man": Maybe their quintessential hit? There is the characteristic instrumental sound and the voices melding together in a typical fashion. The liner notes suggest that the Byrds were a kind of synthesis between Bob Dylan and the Beatles. I'm not so sure that I see that, but this cut might make the case for some listeners. This is a smooth melodic piece, so typical of the Byrds. A laid back sound. . . .
