...when it is remastered by the chucklehead who did "Goodbye" by Cream (the latest remaster). Don't get me wrong this is a fine album and unlike some people here, I feel that the trio of studio tracks demonstrated continued growth for the band. Eric Clapton and George Harrison's "Badge" features a sublime melody for the chorus and Harrison himself reused the bridge of the song (which is how it got its title--Clapton read "bridge" as "Badge")for "Here Comes the Sun" for The Beatles' "Abbey Road" (in fact all of the guitar playing up until the solo is Harrison playing rhythm guitar). Jack Bruce and Peter Brown's "Doing That Scrapyard Thing" is wonderfully eccentric and points to the direction of his second solo album (although it was released first--confused? You already know the album - all those songs you never cared to listen to on the one side, and the ultimate EP heavy rock classic on the other - the first record side you totally wore out in college. You can't get that on iTunes - all they offer is the short radio cut and the very lame, overly long live version. No, if you want this bit of psychedelic mayhem on your iPod, friends, you'll have to rip it like I did. But once you do it's all groovy from there!

Subject says it all. I am not an extremely picky audiophile; I can listen to 128k mp3's all day and they sound fine to me. But this is like nails on a chalkboard. Even the Monkees great music can't overcome the limitations of the awful engineering and "remastering" on this album. From the get-go, the Monkees theme is totally flat, no bottom at all. It sounds like you are listening to AM radio. The rest of the tracks are all over the place, from bad to worse. There isn't a single track on this album that I can even stand to listen to. I can't believe that this was worked on by anyone who knows anything about music engineering or mastering. It obviously wasn't. The engineer(s) should be fired for doing this kind of work. I have the original album and was concerned that maybe the CD wouldn't measure up in audio quality - not the case at all! It is a great quality and Janis's vocals sound almost like they did in person all those years ago!

TYPICAL 1980'S CD BOXSET. This was your typical 1980's boxset, when CD technology was first emerging. It contains about 60% previously released material, and 40% unreleased material (many of which should have never been released). Personally, I was not a fan of these releases, but I bought them anyway because the CD selections at the time were very limited. Since this is an 1980's boxset, the sound quality is poor. Well, it isn't horrible, but it isn't very good. The sound is a little flat and muffled. It certainly, is not very good by today's CD standards. The sound quality on most CD's 1980's CD's was not very good. This quickly succeeded sophomore release is possibly the closest Morrison and crew ever came again to putting out a disc as solid as their legendary self-titled, and although it does have a few less then perfect entries and perhaps tries to mimic the original formula, most of the songwriting and effortless, innovative band interaction still astonishes with an assured vision never really captured quite the same again in rock.

I have the recent Marvin Gaye Deluxe remasters of What's Going On; Let's Get It On and I Want You. I don't have anything earlier though and Disc 1 of this set is perfect for me and I like having Disc 2 anyway. Disc 1 has all the early hits before Marvin took total charge of his career and recordings. All the early hits are here and nicely mastered. I Have many of the "GOLD" sets and I appreciate them. Yes, sometimes they are a repackage of an existing sets (see Yes: Gold) but other sets are pretty unique and very necessary. If you need a good Marvin Gaye Compilation this is where to start.
