Wilson can write some catchy stuff. Very stunning hi-rez recording in surround...atmospheric, then at once loud and in your face. This was way out of my musical tastes, but I am glad I checked them out. Many people were buzzing about them so I had to see what was up....glad I did! Challenging at first, but worth repeated listening sessions.

I recently ordered 4 or 5 Janis Joplin CDS and this one is by far my favorite.

The studio material veers from the inspired ("White Room," never mind that Jack Bruce and Pete Brown seemed to play a kind of see-and-raise on Eric Clapton's earlier "Tales of Brave Ulysses," though Clapton unfurls one of the finest rounds of controlled wah-wah fills and solos of its time; "Sitting on Top of the World," which sounds first too reverent until Clapton spins a spellbinding solo and Bruce supports him with a neatly climbing bass line; "Born Under a Bad Sign," in which Ginger Baker's Latinesque polyrhythm competes neatly with Clapton's stinging Albert King-like lines; "Those Were The Days," maybe the second-best song Baker wrote for the trio) to the modest ("Deserted Cities of the Heart," "Politician"), to the mundane. As much as I love Stevie Wonder as an artist, it's almost impossible to buy every last album he's ever released. Not only that, it would be way too costly to attempt (though I would say every 70s album SHOULD be bought). This set is the epitome of what a compilation set should be -- virtually every meaningful song he has made over his vast career. Highly recommended to anyone who wants to know what Stevie was about in one stop.

SLOW, EASY AND WITH STYLE THAT COMES FROM JUST FEELING THE MUSIC. ONE OF THE FEW VIDEO PRESENTATIONS THAT ACTUALLY MAKES THE MUSIC SOUND BETTER. IF YOU HAVE NEVER BEEN "COOL" IN YOUR LIFE......LISTEN AND WATCH THIS DVD. YOU WILL THEN BE "COOL' FOREVER.

"12 Dreams" is the original Spirit's great swan song. Recorded just before fracturing into Jo-Jo Gunne and a depleted Spirit, the band was peaking (literally) during the making of this psychedelic classic. If you can get the vinyl, do so, as that mix features a better balance of sounds than the CD. However, the CD features a more playful Hendrix-like swirl of stereo effects than the original, so depending what state of mind you're in you might like that.

There have been an absolute plethora of Rare Earth CD's released over the past two decades. However, this CD, excellently remastered by Suha Gur, has not only the best audio, but is the only one to include "Get Ready", "Ma", "(I Know) I'm Losing You" & "What'd I Say", in their original, full-length-jam LP versions. If you are looking to build yourself the best-sounding Rare Earth anthology, you should purchase not only this CD, but The Very Best Of (now OOP, but used copies are still available), and Ma. These three discs will get you the essential Rare Earth repertoire. Up to this point I had never owned The Piper at the Gates of Dawn. I'd owned all the other Floyd albums, but this has really got me stoked. I'd always tended to shy away from Syd Barrett's Pink Floyd, but this set has changed my mind. The Mono and Stereo versions coupled with the alternative versions and singles have given me a new found respect for the genius that was Syd. Some of it sounds dated to the psychedelic 60's, but most of it seems timeless and captures the imagination, taking me back to a psche-developing english childhood gone by and longed-for. A very intriguing look into the mind of a musical/artistic genius, whom we lost far too soon.
