It used to be that 45's were the mainstay of immediate satisfaction. LPs were for hits and leftovers.

Rolling Stones, like most bands of the time, wanted to put out their newest within a few weeks of recording it. That is what made the '60's so great; popular culture as soon as you turned the radio dial to your favorite station.

"Flowers" is a complilation of 45's from 1966 to 1967, most not on any LP. Baroque songs like "Lady Jane" "Ruby Tuesday" "Ride on Baby", Motown sweet first attempts "My Girl", hard rockin' nasty "Let's Spend The Night Together", folk/country Dylan "Back Street Girl" "Sittin' on A Fence", trad blues of "Please Go Home", contempory rock like "Mother's Little Helper".

This is an example of Rolling Stones as they found their way competing ... Read More

The Animals: Eric Burdon on vocals, Chas Chandler on bass, John Steel on drums, Hilton Valentine on guitar, Alan Price and Dave Rowberry on organ and piano. And this group made some of the best blues rock music of the 1960s. This CD includes works recorded in 1964 and 1965.

It starts out with the classic "House of the Rising Sun." This is rawly sung and sung in a compelling manner by Eric Burdon. He had one of the truest blues voices of the 1960s among younger singers. The organ of Alan Price adds a really neat element to this song, with foreboding lines such as "[this house] has been the ruin of many a poor boy, and Lord I'm one."

I also enjoy their effort at singing Chuck Berry. His "Around and Around" is a wonderful little rock and roll piece, and the Animals cover it nicely. Burdon ... Read More

What if the Beatles had released this album without the movie. And if they themselves had written the orchestral music on the B-side. And released this as an epic semi-progressive rock tale about a Yellow Submarine. Then this might have been a real classic album in the progressive rock genre, almost a year before King Crimson appeared.
But when we know that these songs were just thrown together, 2 of them previously released, 2 of them from the archives being Sgt Pepper-rejects, and the orchestral score of course being written by George Martin for a film, then it's considered a disappointment. Even if the music in both cases sounds exactly the same. Isn't that an interesting thought?
My advise is this: take YELLOW SUBMARINE with a grain of salt and find that it's an interesting mix between whacky psychedelic rock ... Read More

My acquaintance w/Porcupine Tree has only been for the past few years, & the majority of their CDs that I own are their latest releases. In other words, I don't feel I have a very "historical perspective" of the band's catalogue.

Having made that disclaimer, I eagerly awaited getting to see a concert version of PT, & I was/am not disappointed. In fact, I find the whole thing jaw-droppingly good. Porcupine Tree is not a terrific visual act, such as KISS or Madonna; they just let their musical prowess say what needs to be said.

And what prowess! I was pretty sure that Gavin Harrison's drumming would be stellar & it is. The biggest revelation to me was how Richard Barbieri's keyboards soared over all the other instruments, creating a very unnerving & even at times frightening vibe. Of ... Read More

This is a Moody blues live concert recording captured at the Isle of Wight Music Festival in 1970, featuring the five original members of the Moodies during the peak of their creative genius from 1967-1972. Compared to today's standards, the intrumentation and production was a bit archaic and primitive back then compared to the Moody's live-in-concert production of recent years, a la the "Live at Red Rocks", "Hall Of Fame", and "Lovely To See You" concert releases. Included in this set are live performances of three tracks from the "Question of Balance" album, which was released at the time this concert performance was recorded, along with other Moody Blues classics. Dedicated Moodies fans will indeed enjoy this set, while those not really appreciating the sound and production quality of that era may desire to try one of the Moody Blues more ... Read More

Pink Floyd evolved to a super group over the years, but I love to go back to the early years. They were way ahead of their time. I remember when I was first introduced to Pink Floyd in Spring 1968, when I saw a video of "Let There Be More Light" on TV. That got my attention, and I've been a fan ever since.

That line from a much later song could be an unintentional self-review of this album. What you're getting here is the last hurrah of a much earlier permutation of the band. Half of it is a four-cut live set that I think is their first live album, extended with a smattering of solo works. The live disc contains a version of "Astronomy Domine" that is described by another reviewer with some accuracy as too close to the studio version, but you're also getting "Careful With That Axe Eugene", a slash movie without picture. The intro eases in, someone whispers ominously the warning in the song's title, then guitars and voices start shrieking bloody murder. That track has a shorter studio version that never made either of the first two albums and is next to impossible to find even as a rarity. You also get "Set the Controls" and "Saucerful Of Secrets", those first ... Read More

If you are considering a purchase of Big Hits (High Tide and Green Grass), from March 1966, the main thing that you need to do is to make a careful comparison of the song list against the 2-disk album, Hot Rocks 1964-1971, the first disk of which covers a similar Stones period. The difference in songs? In a nutshell: It's All Over Now, Tell Me, Not Fade Away, and Good Times, Bad Times are not on Hot Rocks 1964-1971. Perhaps more importantly, though, the awesome Paint It, Black is on Hot Rocks 1964-1971 but not on Big Hits (High Tide and Green Grass). By buying Hot Rocks you get more bang for your buck, because the 2nd disk of Hot Rocks has a lot more great stuff from 1966 to 1969. Also, Hot Rocks (2 disks) is only a dollar or two more than Big Hits (with only 1 disk). In short, get Big Hits only if you do not have all of the early albums and you really want the ... Read More

Wilson can write some catchy stuff. Very stunning hi-rez recording in surround...atmospheric, then at once loud and in your face. This was way out of my musical tastes, but I am glad I checked them out. Many people were buzzing about them so I had to see what was up....glad I did! Challenging at first, but worth repeated listening sessions.
