The first Opeth song I ever heard was Harvest. I heard it as part of a random collection of songs that came packaged with a magazine. I'd never heard of Opeth but loved Harvest. Of course I had no idea then that Harvest doesn't give a good impression of what Opeth really does. Harvest is only half of Opeth.

Before that, I wasn't a fan of metal at all, and surely not death metal. The genre was completely foreign to me and not even something I wanted to explore. Still, this was the time of Napster so I got a few more Opeth songs from Blackwater Park to see what else they had. Needless to say, they didn't compare to Harvest much and I wasn't much interested at first. It sounded like noise and screaming. Not to mention the songs were really long.

I got to like it, though. ... Read More

I expected great guitar work, and Buckethead delivers, but the album is also diverse and fun to listen to. Highly recommended. It leans towards the metal / shredding side of things, and has enough changes in the songs to keep you interested.

84.Chronicles by: Rush

Music : Chronicles
Regarding Rush, I guess I'm a "moderate" fan. I have a lot of respect for them as a band, and I like several of their songs, but when I started buying all their albums I wasn't into a lot of them also. Yes, I prefer a shortened version of 2112! The gripe: one of my favorite Rush songs, YYZ, is not on Chronicles (the only other Rush CD I own is Moving Pictures, so that's OK - all the others I had like 2112 and Fly By Night and Signals were on cassette). The bottom line: Chronicles is an awesome "best of" Rush double CD. For a casual or even moderate Rush fan Chronicles probably has everything you need. I like "older" Rush much better than the newer, so I listen to disc one MUCH more than two. Some of the songs on there are among my all time favorites from any band - Working Man, Fly By Night, Anthem, ... Read More

The second part of the Epica saga is definitely the stronger- from start to finish, it's just a slam-perfect blend of metal, orchestra, and of course the awesome voice of Roy Kahn. The best tracks would have to be March of Mephisto (Featuring Shagrath, another great vocalist who uses death grunts and growls to create a splendidly horrifying Mephisto) and the Haunting, a less heavy more poppy kind of song but still absolutely chilling. (And it has the beautiful vocals of Simone Simons in it, so of course it's a winner.) The entire album puts together a tale somewhat like the story "Faust" about a man who is tempted by the devil. What a great topic for a metal album!

Overall this is my favorite Kamelot album, and in you want something new metal-wise... this would have to be it. If you're looking ... Read More

Liquid Tension Experiment's debut marked several firsts: for one it marked the first collaboration between keyboard guru Jordan Rudess with Petrucci/Portnoy and it marked the first real time that the main Dream Theater songwriting core of Petrucci/Portnoy were free to write a full album of instrumental music without having to make structure for vocals. The result is a stunning album that sounds like a hybrid of insane jazz/fusion and DT's brand of bombastic, melody-drench, and ultra-technical prog-metal.

The songs are excellently crafted, especially when one considers that the album was written AND recorded in a mere 2-3 weeks. The opener 'Paradigm Shift' sets the tone for the album right from the get-go, exploding out of your speakers with a lightning-speed shred lick and exploding into a melodic progression ... Read More

Megadeth fans should get `That One Night', turn the sound up, and enjoy. This is a first class production, capturing the band giving a killer performance, in front of a huge energetic crowd in Buenos Aries, Brazil in 2005. The 90 minute concert, includes music from the 20 year career of the band, with an emphasis on their newer material. Dave Mustaine is fully recovered from an arm injury that caused Megadeth to be dissolved a few years previous. He has no problems singing and playing intricate rhythm parts, then executing precise speed metal leads. Second lead guitarist, Glen Drover is also impressive, handling all the material smoothly, no easy task for a band with a musical catalog like Megadeth. Bass player Jimmy McDonough, and drummer Shawn Drover, display energy and aggression as well.

I can't believe that I have ever seen a rant about prog rock, instead of a review for CD before. Who the heck is this Adem dude anyway? "Rock is supposed to be mindless". Well that is nice to know, now that I have listened to decades of great music with great lyrics by many, many bands that so many other people think are wonderful.

By the way, this is an excellent recording. Don't always pay attention to all of the reviews by the Amazon personnel!

Greg Howe is an inspirational player but he plays it safe on this recording and the result is a mediocre outing.

I have always been inspired by Greg's playing and you will be too if you explore his other recordings. But, I usually can not get through one of Greg's disks without wanting to pick up a guitar. I am typing as I listen to Sound Proof. That is a big vote of "No Confidence."

While I love Greg's playing, his tone has always annoyed and perplexed me. At first I thought it was that "lost high frequency hearing to countless loud nights on the road" syndrome I often associate with players with a very bright guitar tone. Then, I thought it might be that years of practicing with the Rivera era Fender had just conditioned him to play his best in that (less than pleasant) tonal range.

Remember when they actually sang on metal recordings? Well here is Savatage at it's best in my opinion. Great guitar playing and good singing. Almost like an old Metal Church album. This is Savatage before they got a little too far from their roots of metal (like the Wake of Magelin).
