Symphony X continue to be one of the premier progressive metal acts in the U.S. It is a shame that they are not more popular here. "Paradise Lost" is a musical interpretation of the John Milton poem of the same name dealing with the fall of man in the garden of Eden at the hands of the devil. Heady stuff for sure, but Symphony X excels at this type of storytelling and creates another very very strong body of work. Musically the album gets a bit more metal riff oriented than the band's previous efforts and this may turn off fans of more symphonic albums like "V". Still, all of the elements that fans of the band have come to know and love are still here with Russell Allen's Ronnie James Dio like vocals towering over it all. This is certainly a more brutal album sonically than previous ... Read More

After spending the last several years laboring as a better-than-average -- and highly professional -- pop group, Rush returned to its hard-rock roots on COUNTERPARTS. Also, despite the presence of a couple of clunkers, they managed to come up with a fairly strong set of songs. The result was the band's best effort to date since GRACE UNDER PRESSURE.

The album opens with a really astounding 1-2-3 punch. On "Animate" the group manages to deconstruct a riff that sounds like it is straight off of a Pearl Jam record and to turn it into a bit of frothy hard prog-rock. "Stick it Out" is probably Rush's heartiest slab of metal since 2112 and is a heck of a lot of fun. "Cut to the Chase" is another strong up-tempo rocker which manages to sustain the momentum generated by the first two tracks. ... Read More

I fail to see how anyone can say images and words is better than this album. I love the original DT as much as the next fan, but I actually feel everything after Awake almost outdoes anythign previous, especially this album and Scenes From a Memory. I'm not absolutelly in love with the 2nd concept cd in this set, but it has its moments. That said, the first cd with five nice, long DT style prog tracks is surelly some of the best in their catalogue. I honestly don't know why everyone wants to compare all their later cd's to Images and Words and Awake...those two albums just don't compare at all.

I don't like writing a huge review about every track or anything to that degree, so all I will say is that, if you loved the Scenes... album, you will love this as well. This album quite possibly had the ... Read More

I am a fan of Rammstein because they make good and I can't really think of a bad song that they've made but I was disapointed with this cd. Most of the songs are at a slower pace which is okay because I do like their slower ballads like Seemann, Nebel, or Ohne dich but I also really like there heavy fast side too and you don't get to see too much of that here.

There are a few fast songs like Benzin, Mann gegen Mann and Zerstoeren which are okay but they are easily forgetable and repetitive and don't stand out too much. Some of their earlier songs were a little repetitive but they were still good and they pumped you up these songs don't seem to work the same way. The only good fast song is Te quiero puta!, which is sung in Spanish and it has some Mexican music thrown in which makes it stand out and ... Read More

I am so ticked (of course I would use other words) I was so excited about once again having this album (since I first purchased it on cassette in the 80s)and was with the remixes and the new art (although I personally preferred the originals) but these where much better mixes than the so far so good so what those where very disappointing compared to the originals....anyway, what really put me over the edge was the badly bleeped out new version of these boots! It's like they could have just muted the vocal track! or remixed it out but no instead an outrageously ridiculous loud beep over all the music ( you cant even hear anything else! over it) and he swears through half the song so...its pointless!!! shouldve been mixed out so we could still enjoy the song or removed all together just %$E(&^$)me off! now I realize ... These guys keep getting better. The prior albums had moments of brilliance (see songs like "Karma", "The Spell", or "Silent Godess") but were somewhat hit-or-miss. With this album Kamelot gets rid of the "miss". Expect fast-paced, and occasionally heavy power metal. And if power metal isn't your gig, it's not typically mine either. The focus here is on Khan's divine vocals. While every song is solid, the killer cuts are "The Edge of Paradise", "Wander", and "The Mourning After".
