I am 40 and have been listening to instrumental guitar stuff for half my life, maybe more. I am all over the place with my tastes. This album did not take me very long to start to enjoy. I was first introduced to it via Whitewash, which is infectious enough, but the rest of the CD is even moreso. Yes, there are a couple of times when you think, "maybe he should have shortened this by a minute", but overall, the disc shows an artist who is very in touch with both over the top soaring leads, and soft touch stuff that makes you think it was played with a child's hands (that's a compliment). Buckethead, however strange the image, is a very adept player who can do this type of thing as good as any of the rest of them out there. It's unfair to compare him to Vai, Satch, et al, as he possesses a different ... Read More

PRESTO is the second record produced during Rush's pop period (1987-91) and is the most successful. Despite a couple of lulls, this is one of the strongest sets of songs that the band ever came up with. I'm not sure if they are RUSH songs, but they're good nonetheless.

The album opens with a bang. "Show Don't Tell" is probably Rush's best pure pop song. Who thought they could get funky? "Chain Lightning" is almost as good and "The Pass" is one of Rush's more inspired ballads. Finally, "War Paint" is a little silly, but who can resist the coda with the "boys and girls together paint the mirror black" bit. About as shamelessly catchy as Rush has ever gotten.

After that the record is a little more hit or miss. There is nothing that bothers me, but some of it is kind of forgettable. ... Read More

First of all, I must say that this album is not for anyone who doesn't have an appreciation for metal. Epica certainly has a devotion to the metal scene.Look up interviews on youtube and you will find that the band doesn't consider themselves to be similar to rock bands like Evanescence, which some have compared them to. Lead singer Simone Simons with her clear angelic voice is certainly the star of this group, however the album would not be what it is without the contrast between sweet melody and the depths showcased by group leader, Mark Jansen and the comparatively strong dark quality of the growls and grunts featured in these songs. A true fan of Epica will find this album is even better than their last albums, as there is a noticeable increase of input from Ms. Simons in terms of writing and vocal strength. Anyone ... I was one of the skeptical people when I heard about this album. As a big fan of their old stuff, and even Withering to Death, I was mildly disappointed with Marrow of a Bone and it's "wall of fuzz" sound. All of my worries were laid to rest when I popped this cd in.

In an inexplicable twist, Diru has been able to marry the sound they had on Withering and Vulgar with some of their older stuff to make something heavy, yet melodic. The ballads are there ("Glass Skin"), the heavy songs with screaming are there, and the straight up rock with well placed hooks are back. The one thing I enjoyed the most is that while we still have heavy songs, I can actually hear the guitar chords. On Marrow, the guitar in a majority of the songs was just a palm muted fuzz that made it difficult to discern what was really going on. ... Read More

For some odd reason, I had 'Octavarium' for two years before I even bothered to listen to the title track. I often find it difficult to get into the more Yes/King Crimson/Floyd-ish 70s-style prog-rock so I figured I wouldn't enjoy it too much, and....well, lemme cover the rest of the album first. The whole disc revolves around the theme of numbers (particularly 8 and 3) and various other themes (terrorism in 'Sacrificed Sons', ungrateful people in 'Never Enough', and a return to Portnoy's AA saga in the killer 'The Root of All Evil'). All of them are brought together in the mammoth title track at the end.

1. The Root of All Evil 9/10 (solid crunching heavy opener which brings in old motifs from 'This Dying Soul' since this is the 3rd part of the AA saga; heavy riffs, great melodies, and great lyrics. A winner).

To sum up this album in a few words would be to say that it sounds like an Opeth cover band. The chillingly beautiful moments are gone. The transitions are cheesy and abrupt. The riffs are more tame and boring. Mikael's vocal wankery is at a climax with this album. And to top it all off... Porcelain Heart.

I've been an Opeth fan since BWP and it kills me to write this, but it's only fair. It pains me to see a band that had so much promise spiraling down into the abyss of mediocrity. The next album will make or break the band, you can count on it.

Rammstein's debut album doesn't dissapoint. I listened to most of the tracks long before I got the album itself. To say that this is Rammstein at its rawest and simplest isn't really an understatement. Eventually, the band started to develop a more melodic and slower style, decreasing with each album until Reise Reise. I am keen to the slower songs, like Seemann, Klavier and Nebel. I started with Mutter, and it took me long to buy another album from the band... basically because the band was kind of typecasted with Du Hast when The Matrix was released and you basically heard it every week for two years.

My personal favorites from this album are Wollt Ihr Das Bett In Flammen Sehen?, Der Meister and Du Riechst So Gut. It's great to hear a band that's good from the very beggining.

Purchased this CD about a year ago due to all the great reviews posted on Amazon. I have three Dream Theater CD's, Metropolis Part II, Train of Thought and Change of Seasons. Train of Thought is really good and Metropolis Part II is one of my favorite CD's.

Listened for a few times when I received, and I wasn't very impressed. Pull Me Under, Under a Glass Moon and Another Day have their moments, but overall just wasn't much to grab my attention.

Recently decided to give it another listen to see if I just put it to the side too quickly. Sometimes it just take more listens for an album to grow on you. After five or six more listens, sad to say I still don't care for this very much.

Oh the guys can really play their instruments, but most of the songs just really fall flat. The operatic screaming of James La Brie makes ... Read More
