Music : Everyone Who Pretended to Like Me Is Gone
3 1/2

Raw and rugged indie rock excursion brought a darker, minimalist jolt to the forefront. If one prefers their Killers more unhinged one will be happy although the band does occasionally wander into repetition or "trying to be different" self-consciousness at times coupled with an often glaring, apparent Dylan-channeling of an attention seeking frontman. The album's unabashed off-kilter catchiness, however, still retains an urgency that will have worn off with many other similar seeking "edgy" outfits before and since this debut.

This album, it seems, will probably be regarded for a while as being a classic. I stand by my stance that I really don't care for negative reviews as much, because music is enjoyable to other people, that I can understand. But, this?

Only if you were dead or in a coma. This infernal piece of _______ lacks everything that makes up music. Most people could easily just knock them for the fact they are derived, unimaginative music that doesn't have an ounce of creativity. I don't even know WHO influenced these clowns, as the fact they seem to have no inspiration in their music and don't take their influences and make an interesting, or a sound that sounds great and has a value to it. These guys are probably as derivative as you can get, and I'm sure most veteran alternative/punk/indie ... Read More

This CD has hardly left my CD player for the past month. After a month of the musical doldrums brought on by Joe Stummer's untimely death, the music of the Libertines has lifted my spirits. Their music has tremendous energy that recalls The Clash's London Calling era and The Jam. Produced by Mick Jones, he has left his mark all over it. If we can't have the Clash, at least they left some great followers in the Libertines.

75.Broken Boy Soldiers by: The Raconteurs

Music : Broken Boy Soldiers
Forming The Raconteurs was the greatest idea Jack White has ever had. When he realized that his main project, The White Stripes, wasn't going anywhere, he got together with Brendan Benson and the remnants of the band The Greenhornes. The result was something that sounded nothing like anything White had ever done, and it was recieved warmly by critics. The music is a combination of indie rock, blues, and folk with lyrics similar to those of Beck's ("Intimate Secretary," "Store Bought Bones") and it sounds like nothing I've ever heard. At a mere thirty three minutes, the album is extremely upbeat and very easy to get through, and it only gets weak near the end. The album is in no way repetative and every song is unique, especially with White and Benson sharing vocals. For the most part, the music is very ... Read More

OK, I'm showing my age here, but I bought this album back when it first came out. It had a nice, shiny metallic shimmer to the cover, which was a trip back in the day. The music on this is killer. I don't think there's a song here I don't know by heart. It's one of those albums I've played so many times, flipped it over and then played the other side, that you could start a song anywhere and I'd know what was up next.

Steppenwolf stood out from the "groovy peace and love" bands of the late '60s. They dressed like hippies, but there was a rougher, darker interior lurking beneath, and that comes through in their music, too. Obviously, a lot of people will get "Born to Be Wild," but check out ALL the songs. From the opener, Sookie, Sookie, to the final notes of The Ostrich, this album rocks! It's ... Read More

Forget what the haters say in other reviews...the reason to buy THIS release over other Roky albums is simple: He actually gets paid when you buy it. (Proceeds go to the Roky Erickson Trust.) Many of his other releases were only semi-legitimate, and purchase of them only further exploits a man who has often been ill-equipped to handle the details of his dealings with the unctuous music industry.

Besides that, this IS the vital collection of material from every aspect of Roky's career, and if nothing else, it proves that years of mental illness has done absolutely nothing to diminish this man's natural talent and heart-stopping singing voice.

Roky's back from the brink and gigging again for the first time in years. Buy this record, learn it by heart, then go catch the legend live in action!

Bows + Arrows was a huge step for The Walkmen, mostly because the songs "What's In It For Me" and "Little House Of Savages" were featured in Fox's "The O.C." Also, "The Rat," my favorite Walkmen song, was featured in the video game Major League Baseball 2K7's soundtrack. The album was high up on almost every 2004 "best of" list, and gained much acclaim from Pitchfork, Allmusic, and many others. Like other Walkmen albums, B+A starts off slowly, this time with "What's In It For Me," and by track two you realize that this was money well spent. While staying true to their original dry, jangley sound, they experiment with faster, post-punk influenced songs such as "The Rat" and "The North Pole." The Walkmen seem to have influenced many popular indie bands of today, such as Cold War Kids and White Rabbits. I often find it hard ... Read More
