Lots of fun super-rock original christmas tunes with a smattering of covers. "Run, run, rudolph" everyone knows, but have you heard "Super rock santa?" Overall superior songwriting that's fun, upbeat, joyous, and it ROCKS! plenty of fuzzed out guitar riffs and catchy lyrics. I reccommend everyone, even the bah-humbug types, to get thier stocking stuffed!

Under a half hour The Hives tore through their snarling London-via-Sweden punk revival with glam-rcok inklings (found especially in the singers delivery for better or worse). Many songs do not have the bombastic vision that their singles usually possessed, but from the opening notes it remained undeniable that the unit, however derivative at times, attacked every note and word in full force, somehow almost justifying the short length of the lp.

If you approach this box set expecting a bunch of neo-garage revivalism, you will be instantly disappointed; the fluttering guitars and soaring harmonies of "Vanishing Girl," the first song here, have nothing to do with the Standells and only a passing similarity to the Electric Prunes. It's not like anything you'd really find on a Pebbles or Back From The Grave disc, and its psychedelic flourishes aren't even remotely acidic. The song isn't raw or crude or wild. Instead, it's an otherworldly pop masterpiece, full of quiet anguish and subtle humor, with delicately bewitching vocals shimmering over and around a stunning cascade of emotive melody, underneath which is a 60s-inspired rhythm full of sunshine and hypnosis. After that comes the Lyres' "Help You Ann," which is a quintessential anthem ... Read More

64.Elephant by: The White Stripes, White Stripes

Music : Elephant
Elephant is a pretty much perfect rock album. Jack really shows his musical range, how far he's willing to go how far he's willing to push that res-o-glass Airliner of his. This album is worth buying for "Ball And Biscuit" by itself, that song is seven minutes of pure blues/rock fury and it will never get old, its insane how much loud and how dynamic the guitar work is here. Jack really put his thing down this time. I love "Little Acorns" its like 80's vocals meets modern heavy metal, but comes off really smooth. I gotta say I think this is my favorite Stripes album. "Hypnotise" is a perfect dance rock song and definitely one of my top favorite songs ever. You people have to stop complaining about Megs drumming, Jacks singing etc., gotta remember The Stripes are stripped down raw rock and blues ... Read More

I've heard the band's previous music, and this is probably the most destructive. Led by Howlin' Pelle Almqvist, the Swedes give us their best indie-punk performance on their first album since 2000's Veni Vidi Vicious. With this album, the band begins to move away from it's lo fi-meets-punk origins and moves toward a more indie rock, sophisticated audience with it's Franz Ferdinand-like guitars and well thought out lyrics. There's just one problem: the album does not exceed 30 minutes (29:59...almost). The album consists of twelve great songs, but the longest one, "Walk Idiot Walk," is only three and a half minutes long. Like The Vines, The Hives never seem to be able to come out with albums that last longer than 35 minutes. But unlike The Vines, The Hives hardly ever have the time to slow things ... Read More

The album still packs a punch, especially the first cut, which details the many ways MAerica has failed to live up to its promises. Unfortunately, little has changed, with the current administration adding to our woes!
I was reminded of this great album after watching "USA Vs. John Lennon".

even when she isnt sexily screaming out her lyrics (her "Hey!" on 'Rockers That Swallow' is all it took for me)
even when she sings in normal ranges and tones, her nasal NYC sassyness/accent is kool

I bought this about a year ago, and thinking about getting the American one lately, I've decided to review this precious gem.
Being buried amongst other box sets, and so forth, I haven't listened to it recently, but shall, once I've installed some kind of new shelving to store all the discs accumulating in my humble apartement.
I got the impression, from some reviews, (and even a little from the fantastic, large, colorful, and very infomative book), that, although highly praised, this set is regarded as a cool, fun, trip down a sort of psychedelic memory lane. That's all fine and well, but it's MUCH, MUCH, MORE than that! For example, along with The Yardbirds, (particularly the "Jeff Beck" era), and The Who's, "My Generation", as well early Kinks, and the beginnings of the experimental ... Read More

I watched these guys on "Where the Action Is", collected all of their 45s (even "SS 396"/"Corvair Baby") and always believed they could do more with four chords than anyone else around. That said, their albums really weren't all that good (I had three), so an anthology like LEGEND OF PAUL REVERE hasn't appealed to me. What I wanted for years was a thorough collection of the 1963-72 45s together with some of the more interesting album cuts.

This is very nearly that ideal collection. The mastering is pleasing and on the whole, a job well done. Thank you, RAVEN!

Quibbles: IMO the band's strongest single release was "Good Thing (still gives me chills) b/w "Undecided Man" and both of those songs should be here. "Undecided Man" was The Raiders' answer to The Beatles' "Eleanor Rigby" ... Read More

Yeah, what the other reviewers said. This album is just straight up rock n roll. I've been playing it for while now and it still hasn't gotten old or left my car stereo. Check these boys out. It's hard for me to get into new indie bands but the black lips blow all of them out of the water. Their dvd is funny too.
