It's been almost 11 years since Portishead released their last self-titled album (I'm not counting Roseland NYC Live). The three member group of Adrian Utley, Geoff Barrow and more prominent Beth Gibbons have been often credited with making the trip hop genre more mainstream. Originating out of Bristol, UK, Portishead introduced their hometown sound to the commercial radio waves in 1994 with Dummy. With downtempo hip-hop beats, a touch of turntablism, and Gibbons' staple vocals, Portishead instantly created their own style and with that came a vast following. It's no wonder then, that when appropriately titled Third album hit the shelves, it was snatched with a hunger. Prior to the album's street date it was released on last-fm and attracted over 327,000 listeners within 24 hours. On Third, ... Read More

This is my 2nd favorite CD in 2008 (#1 is Cosmic Gate - Back 2 Back 3). The CD1 track 1&2 combo are my favorite tracks right now (basically track 2 but #1 is a nice intro to it). Good stuff.

CD 1 - 5 stars
CD 2 - 4 stars

Nice progressive trance going on here. Good beats and tempo changes.

Check out Markus Schulz - Amsterdam08 for more good tunes.

"Trip-hop"? "Downtempo"? Although it is a dark record, between Beth Gibbons' tortured voice, Geoff Barrows' beats, scratches and samples, and Adrian Utleys' jazzy guitar: this album is pure sex.

Don't believe me? Try it.

Recently, I put my iTunes on shuffle (not sumthin I normally do), and Imogen's "Hide and Seek" started to play. My whole body started to tingle cuz I just love this song, and I hadn't heard in quite a while. After the song had finished, I immediately took my iTunes off shuffle mode, and started "Speak For Yourself!" from track one. "Ahh....!!" I thought to myself, "...such an inspiring album!"...I bathed my hearing senses with every nuance I could soak in. Into my 2nd-listen-in-a-row through the album, I had a disturbing thought! - I had never written a review of one of my all time favorite albums, ever!

First of all, as anyone would agree, Imogen has a beautifully trained voice. She can transition from a soft whisper to a scream like nobody's business! (ok, she really doesn't scream). But in ... Read More

Whenever most audiophiles refer to Moby's crowning career achievement, most will mention his 1999 breakout album, Play. The creativity and originality of Play was a shining moment in the electronica genre, but unfortunately, Moby's creative light has fizzled in his latest offering, Last Night.

With his last album (Hotel) being less than stellar, Moby fans were forced to wait three years to see if he could musically reconcile with his loyal following. However, much to the chagrin of this reviewer, Last Night was a deplorable effort from an artist who was once electronica royalty. When a musician feels inclined to explicitly describe the concept of an album instead of letting the music speak for itself, something is amiss. In the album's liner notes, Moby states, "It's me trying to take 25 years of ... Read More

The first four tracks on Mezzanine are masterpieces, probably the apotheosis of Trip-Hop. Dark, dreamlike, beautiful, stunningly sculpted -- one senses the hundreds, even thousands of studio manhours that went into each song. The rest of the album is brilliant as well, though the "comedown" tracks #5 & #11 might be skipped on repeat listenings. Tracks #6-10 continue the greatness in different directions -- sometimes sly and funny, sometimes crunching rock. Each song has an arc, which takes multiple listenings to understand. This might be sounds repeated at the beginning that are layered upon, then layered upon again, until the whole things unwinds and you are left with the same sounds (the heavy thudding beat in "Angel," the looped feedback in "Dissolved Girl") in a new context. Songs unfold like dreams, with images ... Read More
