Wow - Letterman coined her the coolest guest ever on his show and I agree. Great find for those who love jazz with an infrequent nod to pop. All in all, latin jazz at its best and with the ability to appeal to many music lovers of other genre.

I discovered Astrud Gilberto quite by accident when rummaging thru my sister's extensive jazz album collection... Really wanted to hear her defintive interpretations of 'Corcovado' (after being captivated by EBTG's brilliant drum 'n bass remake) and the seminal standard 'The Girl From Ipanema', and am really enjoying this album.

The two CDs recently purchased featuring the Buena Vista Social Club of Cuba are among my favourites. The opening number, Chan Chan, has a hypnotic rhythm which makes me want to play it over and over. The musicians who feature on this CD are outstanding. Ibrahim Ferrer (now deceased) had a voice like dripping honey. It was just greatly fortuitous that Ry Cooder managed to track these people down in Cuba and record a number of CDs with them before several passed away. Listen to the sample tracks and decide for yourselves!

Let me just say that I'm not too impressed with the series "Ken Burns' Jazz." It was a pretty hack job and really didn't cover all the bases in my opinion. To me, Burns is a very misguided figure and hasn't really done the research about jazz, but I'll save that argument for another time. The music on this box set, while most of it is indeed great and timeless, it fails to capture the true essence of this music I think. I think if anyone is interested in jazz music should start with Miles Davis' "Kind Of Blue" recording and go from there. Being interested in jazz has more to do with passion in my experience. Casual jazz listeners don't really understand the music, because if they did, then they wouldn't have done such a terrible job of putting together such a collection. Traditional jazz piano in a live venue. It doesn't get any better than this and the cuban flavor adds to the mix.

I bought this CD to have a good reference work for Vince Guaraldi, and it did not disappoint. Although he is world famous for his Charlie Brown specials music, and deservedly so, Vince was also an all-around great jazz musician as well as composer. The CD contains the prerequisite "Linus and Lucy", as well as several standards like "Mr. Lucky", and of course the best known of his works outside of Charlie Brown, "Cast Your Fate to the Wind".

What a great recording! When I got this, a couple of months ago when it first came out, I almost cried when I played it. It was so like another favorite of mine, the Bill Evans Trio with Symphony Orchestra recording. Finally. Danilo's playing and Ogerman's arranging/conducting are superb. This is not to be missed. And if you like this you may also want to pick up The Gary McFarland Orchestra with Special Guest Soloist: Bill Evans, Bill Evans: Symbiosis with Eddie Gomez, Claus Ogerman - Two Concertos, Gary McFarland's soundtrack to The Eye of the Devil, and Gary McFarland with Steve Kuhn on October Suite. Great music!

There are stories that only become better with time. Depending on who tells them, of course. Eliane Elias is not only a talented pianist, but also a wonderful singer, reminescent of Astrud Gilberto, but in her own right. This disk has such wonderfully fresh takes on classic bossa nova as "The Girl From Ipanema" and "Desafinado", as well as jazz standards like "They Can't Take That Away From Me" or "Day By Day". And even a great version of Stevie Wonder's "Superwoman". Also pay attention to Ivan Lins, brilliant as ever, in "I'm Not Alone". Another special guest star is Toots Thielmans and Oscar Castro Neves is an exceptional guitar player. This is music both for bossa nova lovers and those who have never even heard of it before. After listening to it they are going to become obsessed with the music.

I am a latin-styled percussionist, and a long time fan of Santana - I folow and know all of his music. The only thing I can say to possibly, dispute what some have said is, that I guess people look for different things in musical content, which is balanced against their expectations, before they hear the first note. The second CD is one Carlos provides, that does include some of his best instrumentals previously, recorded. So, don't expect much new there simply, great Santana music. The first CD sounds as if they are new productions, and they do sound similar to Carlos Santana's work from the 80's, with Alex Ligertwood (??) singing. Maybe, some are looking for something that's so new, that it doesn't sound like the artist you know, or isn't typical of his style. What can I tell you?
