Once again I feel compelled to comment on Emmylou's music. When I first saw this disk I read various reviews here whining that this album is a "downer" and the like. I smiled to myself and bought it without a second thought. I would have bought it no matter what the reviews said. Yes, Emmylou sings about pain, but she also sings about redemption and perseverance, the dawn that follows the darkness. Anyway, what price do you put on music that brings tears to your eyes? But I am writing just to comment on one track from this disk. "All That You Have Is Your Soul", a song that did not grab me when I heard the author's version two decades ago, is rescued here and made Emmylou's own. Sugarland, what can I say? Outstanding lyrics, teriffic compositions and, a lead singer with a fantastic voice and, a vivacious personality. Forgive me but, she's also easy on the eyes. I have all of their cd's and, each one is better than the other. I'm not a big country fan but, I like this band. I think I should add, that I did play guitar for over 40 years, had written and recorded my own music and played in many bands, with many different styles of music. From classical, to jazz, rock, blues and doo wop. So, I think I know something about this subject. Sugarland had broken boundries in the country world and, I truly believe, many critics and promoters know it. They're the kind of band, that can change the face of country music. Good, but not nearly as good as their first (which I still think is their best) CD. And I don't think it matches up to their second CD either. And the "All I want to do" track is really, really annoying!

It's fantastic. I orginially had this recording years ago on a 33rpm record, and like a fool got rid of it. I got it as a replacement on a CD format and its the way I always remembered it.

Yes, there's something tinny about John Denver singing about nature. He comes off like Al Gore lecturing on global warming while living high on the hog in an energy-wasting mansion. I wonder how Denver got to his concerts around the globe? In a carved-out redwood? How did those thousands of fans make it to the arena? By windsurfing? How was the energy produced to amplify his guitar? How was the wealth created for his fans to have disposable income for concerts? Don't RCA's record factories produce waste? It's fine to carp about the smog in Los Angeles. But that smog was created by the industrial society that allowed Denver to have his career. I got this for my dad for Father's Day to play in his truck, I knew it would bring back memories for him, I love Johnny Cash too and should have got 2 one for me...lol I guess I will get myself one later. This CD has 30 songs and is a true must have for Cash fans.

The Second Gleam (2008, Ramseur) The Avett Brothers' fourth studio EP. **1/2 The Avett Brothers are a definitive college-esque band. Hippie circles love 'em and they've got enough spunk to attact even offended ears, but on The Second Gleam, the energy is lost. That in itself is not the problem. In fact, if anything, it shows maturity. However, the material is just downright dull from start to finish. In fact, only on "The Greatest Sum" do soulful vocals actually appear, as the rest of the EP is dominated with cliche remembrances of love, family, and death. To say it is bad is one thing; awful, certainly not. But what makes it bad is its own laziness, which is a cumulative would-be effort of simple rhythms and lyrics.
