Keane's new CD "Symmetry" takes the band in a slightly different direction from their previous discs. The beautiful melodies, melancholy atmosphere, and beautiful piano of their earlier CD's are replaced on Symmetry by an 80's-type sound with new wave synthesizers and a more peppy, upbeat feel. The CD really takes me back to MTV of the early 80's. After several listens I can say that I like "Symmetry", especially because it's always such a pleasure to hear Tom Chaplin sing. But fans of the band's earlier music might struggle to connect with the new style. I like it but I hope it's temporary and they return to their previous sound on the next disc.

Great Oasis's disc are generally consistent from top to bottom. They also have a great, "can't live without" type single as well. The second LP was chock full of them and the last one had a great one in "Lyla". This CD doesn't have a truly great single type standout track. However, one should not pass this CD up because it is generally strong from top to bottom. The use of tamboura is a nice touch. These guys know how to make strong records and this one is no exception.

While it doesn't exactly transcend Parachutes, this is a very decent sophomore effort. Sure it's mopey; sure it's resigned. That's the whole point. The question then becomes, how well does it achieve its goal to mope you out? Well, as it turns out it's pretty damn effective in that department.

Most of the songs are mid-tempo, with lots of dynamic shifts and volume-tweaking. Coldplay have been criticized as being Radiohead Lite (for one thing) but that isn't really true. Coldplay is a lot more melodic than Radiohead; more conventionally "pretty." While that may sound like proof of the very charge, I think the comparison is made more for the quality and timbre of Chris Martin's voice. The similarity to Thom Yorke's voice is sometimes uncanny.

There are some problems, ... Read More

I'm new to Coldplay, but their older tunes are as great as the new ones.

It's not just brilliant because it's Clash.
It is brilliant because you can rarely hear
a whole live show. It would have been classic
if Topper had been there!

I am a big, bif fan of Urban Hymns and was so excited to see a new release from the Verve. Just brilliant work again from these guys. If you are a Verve fan you must get this! Just love the mix of guitars, strings and piano on the songs. It is different from other Verve albums but I recommend it highly.

As seminal an album as has ever been released, this record has lost nothing over the years. Lest punk rock be thought of as sloppy or ill-conceived, this album, from the genre's best-remembered, most influential band, remains as well-crafted as any record ever made. Nothing more need be said.

Don't let the 3 star rating fool you. I love Radiohead. In fact, I think a few songs on here are among my favorite of their whole discography.

However, I can't quite say the same over the majority of the album.

To me as more of a listener, I don't try exploring all the little nooks and crannies of albums a lot of times and, perhaps and probably, as a result, I really couldn't and still can't see the massive appeal this album brings. Is it junk? Hardly.

But I don't believe it deserves the massive reputation it has. Take my opinion with a grain of salt, though. Radiohead is a strongly developed and acquired taste. Both "The Bends" and "In Rainbows" took a fair number of listens before they really hit me as to how good they really were. Unfortunately, this album was the biggest let down ... Read More
