There are religious texts set to music for choir and orchestra that outrank Jenkins's "Stabat Mater", but for moments of orchestral and choral effectiveness, the Jenkins is most commendable. It is always listenable and often moving. There is a sameness to the listening experience as the music evolves... Jenkins seems more intent of creating an effect than in giving this ancient poem a new reading or a new life. I do admire the work, however, and would pay well to hear it in live concert should that opportunity arise. In the meantime, this recording a good value for the dollar.

A terrific album by a great singer. This album represents the considerable territory that Kiri Te Kanawa covers in here repertoire. She moves easily from Handel to Puccini to Jerome Kern. The insertion of classic show tunes as a part of this CD is a nice little plus. Some opera stars absolutely kill popular music by overwhelming it with operatic technique (listen to Richard Tucker singing "What now my love"; this is a pleasant little tune, but it can't stand up to Tucker's voice of steel, using all the power at his command). Te Kanawa sings these songs, for the most part, nicely and does not overpower them with operatic conventions.

She does a wonderful job on Handel's "Let the bright seraphim," displaying good coloratura technique, as a matter of fact. This cut nicely illustrates ... Read More

Young Vasily Petrenko may be a hotshot at the Graomphone, but this coarse, dreadfully played Manfred Symphony proves that hiring a Russian conductor isn't the automatic solution to all your problems. As heard here, the massed winds of the Royal Liverpool orchestra sound like a hurdy-gurdy, and the lower strings are wiry and scratchy. I was fiarly shocked, since I had always had a good opinion of this ensemble. Leaving aside their quality, Petrenko's ideas are pedestrain when they aren't vulgar. He pulls out the stops and hopes that it will be good enough. There's no finesse and no real ideas at work. An earlier recording by this conductor and orchestra of Swan Lake excerpts seemed promising, but this follow-up sorely disappoints.

I was given this CD as a gift when my son was born, and he relaxed to it (or perhaps I did) better than with any other lullaby CD (we had several). When my daughter was born 2 years later, I rocked her to sleep while listening to it as well, and she always fell asleep after just a few minutes of listening to it. All of the pieces are ones that I have always loved anyway and are familiar classical pieces to most people. The rhythms of the pieces are slow and there is very little change in loudness and softness, which helps lull the baby to sleep and keep them that way. Some CD's have loud moments or long gaps between pieces, which tend to wake up a baby that is just falling asleep. This one has neither (with the exception of Clair de lune, which gets loud at the end, but my kids were always in deep sleep by then), ... Read More

The cello concerto is, for Glass, surprisingly lyrical. Nothing earth shaking, but not bad, and certainly well played. The kettledrum business, I'm afraid, is the most appalling piece of cheese, featuring a series of orchestral themes that seem to have been lifted from bad B-movies. That opening motif, which sounds like it should accompany marauding Vikings as their ship approaches the coast, makes me wince. I had the curious experience of hearing this piece the other day in concert, played by far lesser talents than these, and I was struck by how so much tympanic fury signified precisely nothing. No doubt the electric presence of Evelyn Glennie in all her barefoot glory would go a long way toward making this piece tolerable in concert. But this is not a DVD, alas. However, I give the record an extra star for great sound quality. If for ... Read More
