This is an amazing collection of songs, all performed with such skill that even my 8-year-old son likes this CD. Brahms and Beatles, Mozart and Ellington, there is something here for everyone. And thank you, thank you, thank you for "Bassoonist's Holiday."

Kathy Stott is one of the better British pianists and she has recorded many CDs for EMI and Chandos over the years. The notion of recording a CD of piano music that is based on dance is a clever one. Most of the pieces recorded here are rather slight, but none the less delightful for that. There are many familiar works, such as Sibelius's Valse Triste, Albéniz's Tango, Chopin's haunting Mazurka, Op. 17, No. 4 and Brahms's First Hungarian Dance, all done convincingly. (I particularly liked how she made Valse Triste really sound like a dance, not a dirge.) And there are many works that are unfamiliar, too, such as Graham Fitkin's 'Old Style', written for Stott and in its first recording, with its knock-kneed rhythms. I had this album when it first came out in the 1950's. The musical score and arrangements are outstanding. I waited years to find a CD replacement of the lost LP recording that I had. If you want to take a Spanish musical odyssey this CD will take you there. This is Legrand at his best.

This selection has most of the songs I love. Two bad things are ... (1) the recording is low-grade, and (2) names of pianists are non-existent. Oh well. I still give it thumbs-up though.

Great CD. It's now the fav CD on my stereo. We like the second CD better though.

I didn't think I would like this CD. However, after the first listen, I had to admit this is a fantastic CD!

Along with Rifkin's indispensable recordings of Scott Joplin's rags, this CD belongs in the collection of anyone with more than a passing interest in ragtime. For those who may be unfamiliar with Rifkin, let me quickly mention that this is NOT honky-tonk ragtime! If you're looking for an out-of-tune piano playing "Five Foot Two," you've come to the wrong place. These pieces are American (North and South) classics, played on a concert grand piano. Rifkin beautifully articulates the rags of James Scott, Joseph Lamb, and tangos of the great Brazilian composer Ernesto Nazareth. Even those who chided Rifkin's Joplin recordings as "dull" may be pleasantly surprised by the energy and pep with which Rifkin attacks some of these pieces. One thing that really pissed me off with this album is how Michel Beroff does his own thing and does NOT follow the tempo markings. People think "oh whatever the heck I feel is the tempo" but it takes away from the character of a piece. For example in "Les cinq doigts" he plays the Lento as an Allegro and everything else the same fast tempo. It makes everything this loud and fast music when there's much more personality in this master gem that Stravinsky composed. Most of the CD sounds very mechanical, and if any character in his playing it's very one-sided. Does not do Stravinsky's strong compositional personality justice.
